I just learned about a new image search technology called TinEye and it reminded me of the things I heard about ilovephotos.com so I thought I'd share it here. (*I know very little about both companies so I'm not sure if these two technologies are really comparable)
If you watch the video on the TinEye site, you can see that it is a brand new way to search for images on the net. It doesn't search for images based on tags and file names but rather uses… Continue
This morning TechCrunch and CNET reported talks are back on, with conflicting stories on the exact nature of the deal. CNET reported that Microsoft proposed a more favorable search-only deal. TechCrunch… Continue

I recently changed from a Windows laptop to a MacBook Pro for my main machine. I have always been familiar with OS X because others in the office use it and I test Swing applications on OS X for customers. The transition to OS X on my primary machine has been relatively painless. For the most part the UI is elegant, aesthetically pleasing and provides a great user… Continue
This week the blog featured several good iPhone 3G posts. Finally the wait it over. The most important improvements are 3G network support, GPS, support for third party apps, Exchange push support and a significant price cut. These are all great, but I can't believe we still don't have basic features like cut, copy and paste. I wonder if this is because they haven't figured out how to reconcile text selection with the fact that click and drag gestures… Continue

Emerging Mobile News
You can pretty much count on a new 3G iPhone come Monday. But redesigned MacBooks? Don't bet on it. Here's my take on what Steve Jobs will announce during his much-anticipated keynote at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. New iPhone I'm almost certain that we'll feast our eyes on a new iPhone on Monday-one with access to speedy 3G networks along with build-in GPS, both features that are sorely missing in… Continue

A few months ago I ran across an AJAX interactive Ruby interpreter that really impressed me. It is an actual, working Ruby interpreter with an AJAX help system triggered by certain commands. If you type "help" followed by a number it will display the chapter's content in the area below the interpreter.
Today,… Continue

Yesterday Softbank Mobile announced that they will start iPhone service in Japan this year. With 18 million customers, Softbank is the third largest carrier in the country after Docomo and KDDI. The Japanese iPhone will be the 3G (WCMDA) version. A lot of people speculated that Docomo would be the carrier for iPhone, but Docomo simply thought Apple was asking for too much in the revenue share agreement. Apple has been playing Docomo and Softbank off… Continue
What's happening with Perl, the jackknife of all kitchen sinks? I still learning and still liking it. ASP.Net is too weird. PHP is so inconsistent. Don't know Java or the other silly web languages.
Started out on the HP 2000E and HPBasic, pounding away at a teletype in Keller Hall. Then it was Fortran and punch cards on the IBM 370. Soon the retail personal computer appeared, TRS-80 and Apple II. Then IBM Personal Computer, 256K memory, dual floppy drives. Now it's FreeBSD, Apache,… Continue

Working with other TechHuians to build this online community has been, and continues to be, a fantastic adventure. We've discovered people all over the state working on fascinating technology projects. As I stated in response to an… Continue
I met Henk about ten years ago just after he moved from Japan to Hawaii. He had a lot of fantastic stories about his adventures in Russia and Japan, and was full of ideas about what he wanted to accomplish in the gaming industry. His energy was contagious. Last month I enjoyed chatting with Henk over lunch about iLovePhotos, … Continue

Trivia question: What is the most important decision you will be making at the ballot box at this November election? (Hint: it’s not the election of any candidate).
Answer: Whether or not to hold a Constitutional Convention or “ConCon”.
Every 10 years, voters have the opportunity to decide whether or not we can hold a ConCon which is where wholesale changes can be made to our state constitution.
Our last ConCon was 30 years ago and in 1978 some… Continue
OMG! I cannot believe my second semester back at KCC is over in a week! It's always exhilarating and sad at the same time when another semester is done. I have had so much fun this semester. I am really enjoying both the designing and coding sides of web design. Surprisingly enough I am enjoying coding almost more than the designing! That is such a big surprise for me because I have to admit I was dreading coding.
I really took it upon myself to learn to code because I was… Continue
