I just returned from a business trip to Tokyo. Its always fun to see whats happening in Japan's tech mecca. Every year the vending machines and mobile phones seem to move closer to sentience. In case they are already self aware and are reading this newsletter, I want you to know I welcome our new vendoketai skynet overlords.
Tokyo is the most wired city in the world. If you've ever seen the Simpson's episode where Homer gets restaurant recommendations from his hotel toilet - well,…

Aloha,
I’m in the process of creating a cable/online introductory Computer Science course. Basically the outcomes of the course are for students to decide and apply digital literacies required for the 21st century workplace. From an employer’s point of view what digital literacies do you look for when you are hiring employees?
The course will be based on a scenario where students perform real-world activities found in the workplace.…

Aloha All,
I just launched a new website and social network called "Art In Films".
http://www.artinfilms.comI created it to showcase the art you see in films that enhance the scene or are just in the background.
I'd love to get some Hawaii artists to join my network and showcase any work they may have in films. Big screen or Small. Blockbuster movies, independent, foreign films or locally produced shows like Hawaii Five-O. A…

Even if you can't afford to localize right away, don't get in the way of your Japanese and Chinese users
I'm currently in Tokyo on business. As I travel around the city I've been spot checking Foursquare's coverage. To my surprise, coverage is excellent. Most popular eateries and nightspots have already been added. Many already have mayors. Foursquare specials…

Hawaii is the most isolated population center on Earth. We're 2,400 miles from California, nearly 3,900 miles from Japan and 5,000 miles from China. We are the widest state in the US and the only one to grow coffee.
We are also one of only two states that you must fly to (I can't swim that far.. sorry guys).
We are dependent on tourism.. all of us - because even if we are funded by external dollars, any decline in local industry…

I'm sure many of you have heard that
Facebook now plans to offer an email service.
Clearly part of this is to undermine Gmail's presence (though I'm skeptical at how successful it will be.. Gmail is in my opinion the best large-scale web application currently in existence).
What's little known is that while Gmail is wildly successful at ~190…

Microsoft created quite a stir on Thursday when they said they are "repositioning" Silverlight and focusing on HTML5 for web apps. Like Adobe, which just demoed a Flash to HTML5 converter, they seem to be conceding that the web world is moving away from plugin-based rich media platforms and toward HTML5. Now they will be playing in a sandbox dominated by Google, a company that…

I debated posting this because we have so many great UH faculty members as members, and I don't want this to turn into a bash-fest on the people who were instrumental in helping us grow this community. That being said, it wouldn't be honest for us not to address the issue. Obviously three major security breaches in a year indicates a very serious problem. I'm sure most of you have read the articles, but for…

Hi all:
Just a quick update to let everyone know that I have changed jobs. I recently left Critigen... Went on Vacation in Oahu and Maui for ten days and came back and opened Covington & Associates, LLC. We handle technical staffing. Contract, Contract-Perm, and Permanent placements. Our areas are California, Nevada, and Hawaii.
We do NOT want to break any of the TechHui site rules, so just as a public services announcement... If you are looking for a job, or if you know…

From the phone to the cloud, where will developers look for a unified, unencumbered platform?
What are the implications of Oracle's lawsuit on the future of robust multi-targeted virtual machines in the software universe? This is a question I've been asking myself over the past few weeks. The vast majority of software written today runs on one of a few runtime environments - the JVM (Java's runtime),…

John Wang just sent me the new App Store Review Guidelines published by Apple. I nearly choked on my coffee when I read through these gems:
Excerpt from the intro: We will reject Apps for any content or behavior that we believe is over the line. What line, you ask? Well, as a Supreme Court Justice once said, "I'll know it when I see it".
Translation: If you don't comply with our…
