Silverlight 3.0 - The First Real Threat to Flex

I just finished reviewing the API docs for Silverlight 3. I'm really impressed with the 3.0 framework. Silverlight has always had good underpinnings including an elegant and clean API, a declarative UI, a solid VM and an excellent programming language (C#). The problem has been a lack of polish in the UI, missing high level components and missing key features already found in… Continue

FREE to a Good Home: 3 Tivos (old Series 1) plus TiVo WiFi

I have 3 Series 1 TiVo boxes, remotes, and a TiVo USB WiFi adapter that I would prefer don't go into the landfill. 2 of them work perfectly. One has problems starting up. I thought one of you gadget gurus might have use for their innards, could use them for parts, or just want another TiVo or two around the house. First person willing to pick them up today in Kailua or next week in town, from Judi Clark, can have 'em. …

Just released my first iPhone app - Ukulele Chord Kumu

This is no simple "plug" for the app, I am open to comments/suggestions/feedback from anyone out there.
It was released Saturday and sold in 6 different countries on Father's Day! I got lucky and it turned into sort of a gift for my dad! This morning we were featured in the Star Bulletin in an article by Erica Engle.

The app can be found here: http://itunes.com/app/UkuleleChordKumu

User Experience - Interrupted

Apple recently announced the much anticipated

iPhone3G S, along with the new 3.0 platform. As usual, Apple has done a stellar job of hyping the release, providing the 3.0 SDK (Software Development Kit) to their huge following of app developers in advance, encouraging them to take advantage of the new capabilities such as copy/paste, voice dialing, compass positioning, video support with editing, and, of course,… Continue

The U.S. Government contacted Twitter about Iranian usage of the service during political protests

One of my interests, as stated on my profile page, is "the intersection of technology/new media with social and political activism."

Reuters India has an article titled, "U.S. State Department speaks to Twitter over Iran.

It is no surprise that Iranians are Tweeting. I think what was a surprise was the reported interaction between the State… Continue

HOWTO: Consume a Groovy Web Service with Flex

Recently, I've been faced with the fact that Flex is quite popular as a web presentation layer. Given my Java background, at first I was quite reluctant to recognize this, until new projects paved the way to learn more about this RIA technology. Since I already have a considerable amount of server-side code in Java, I was wondering if it is possible to connect Java and Flex to get the best of both worlds. Hence this article gives a walk through on how to consume a Groovy Web Service… Continue

Urgent! Help Stop HB1405 - The Bill That Will Devastate Hawaii's Online Media Industry

I hate to be dramatic but the future of Hawaii's online media industry is in jeopardy and your immediate action is needed. Bill HB1405 is a bill that could cause a huge blow to Hawaii's Online Media Industry. It will handicap Hawaii's Online Media by not allowing them to fully monetize their websites giving an advantage to international and mainland companies and professionals.

Frankly, I am very surprised that there has not been more support against this bill from Hawaii's tech… Continue

Star Trek Tech Today: 3D Printing

I recently had the chance to spend some time at RAPID Technology's offices in the Executive Center. Prior to my visit I knew very little about the world of 3D printing. I'd heard of it, but assumed 3D printers were still in laboratories at MIT. I was amazed to learn 3D printing is being used today by businesses for everything from product prototypes and prosthetics to costume armor for movies. It can even be used to print working mechanical devices with moving parts. The… Continue

TechHui Sole Props -- Can you Email Me Your Health Insurance Situation?

I have obtained a meeting with Representative Calvin Say to discuss the prohibitive cost of health insurance for sole proprietors in the State of Hawaii, where there is no mechanism to allow sole props to enter into group buying pools. How are you handling the costs? What is it costing you? And how much has it gone up? We are paying almost $1500 a month for a family of 4 (and its very good coverage but comparable coverage for a family of four at a major employer is roughly $800-$900 per month).… Continue

What do Game Boxes, Graphics Cards, Blade Servers, Lasers, Concentrated Photovoltaics and High Power LEDs all have in common? They all get WAY too hot. How does Pipeline compete in this space with mainland and Japanese firms? They hire their best engineers. In a year… Continue
