New iPhone On The Horizon

Emerging Mobile News

NEW iPHONE

You can pretty much count on a new 3G iPhone come Monday. But redesigned MacBooks? Don't bet on it. Here's my take on what Steve Jobs will announce during his much-anticipated keynote at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. New iPhone I'm almost certain that we'll feast our eyes on a new iPhone on Monday-one with access to speedy 3G networks along with build-in GPS, both features that are sorely missing in… Continue

AJAX Shells: Goosh!

A few months ago I ran across an AJAX interactive Ruby interpreter that really impressed me. It is an actual, working Ruby interpreter with an AJAX help system triggered by certain commands. If you type "help" followed by a number it will display the chapter's content in the area below the interpreter.

Today,… Continue

iPhone in Japan!

Yesterday Softbank Mobile announced that they will start iPhone service in Japan this year. With 18 million customers, Softbank is the third largest carrier in the country after Docomo and KDDI. The Japanese iPhone will be the 3G (WCMDA) version. A lot of people speculated that Docomo would be the carrier for iPhone, but Docomo simply thought Apple was asking for too much in the revenue share agreement. Apple has been playing Docomo and Softbank off… Continue

blog blog blog

What's happening with Perl, the jackknife of all kitchen sinks? I still learning and still liking it. ASP.Net is too weird. PHP is so inconsistent. Don't know Java or the other silly web languages.

Started out on the HP 2000E and HPBasic, pounding away at a teletype in Keller Hall. Then it was Fortran and punch cards on the IBM 370. Soon the retail personal computer appeared, TRS-80 and Apple II. Then IBM Personal Computer, 256K memory, dual floppy drives. Now it's FreeBSD, Apache,… Continue

Featured Techie: Henk Rogers

Henk Rogers

I met Henk about ten years ago just after he moved from Japan to Hawaii. He had a lot of fantastic stories about his adventures in Russia and Japan, and was full of ideas about what he wanted to accomplish in the gaming industry. His energy was contagious. Last month I enjoyed chatting with Henk over lunch about iLovePhotos, …

A Historic Opportunity for Hawaii’s Tech Community

Trivia question: What is the most important decision you will be making at the ballot box at this November election? (Hint: it’s not the election of any candidate).

Answer: Whether or not to hold a Constitutional Convention or “ConCon”.

Every 10 years, voters have the opportunity to decide whether or not we can hold a ConCon which is where wholesale changes can be made to our state constitution.

Our last ConCon was 30 years ago and in 1978 some… Continue

Second Semester coming to a close!

OMG! I cannot believe my second semester back at KCC is over in a week! It's always exhilarating and sad at the same time when another semester is done. I have had so much fun this semester. I am really enjoying both the designing and coding sides of web design. Surprisingly enough I am enjoying coding almost more than the designing! That is such a big surprise for me because I have to admit I was dreading coding.

I really took it upon myself to learn to code because I was… Continue

Hacking BeanShell with JavaCC (Continued)

We will ease into the second part of this series (see Hacking BeanShell with JavaCC - Building a Language, Part 1) with a relatively simple task: implementing a "<>" equivalence operator. This operator calls .equals on its operands and handles nulls on either side. The first step is adding the operator to the JJTree grammar. We will also add a not equivalent… Continue

The Mobile Money Machine

During the past decade, the total value of money sent by migrant workers to their countries of origin has increased steadily. The World Bank and GSM Association estimate that in 2006 alone, approximately $250 billion was remitted globally. These transactions involved 200 million migrant workers, and the figures are increasing by approximately 30 percent per year. For some countries, these remittances exceed both direct foreign investment and… Continue

M-Commerce In North America

M-Commerce

Mention mobile commerce in North America, and the common response is a roll of the eyes. It’s not hard to guess why. Back in the heady days of the Internet dot-com bubble, mobile commerce was one of the many buzz words connected with e-commerce whose promise failed to materialize because the hype was premature. Today’s landscape is much different. Several trends are… Continue
