Reichart: But I must have touched a nerve, so , sure, I agree with everything you said as well...You didnʻt hit any nerves. I didnʻt write Ning ;-) As you pointed out, you use the right tool for the job. TechHui isnʻt a business. Its a community site that is free for anyone with a connection to Hawaii and technology. Many of the members are students, professors, etc. Maybe Iʻm misunderstanding Qtask, but it doesnʻt seem to be positioned toward free community social networks. The players in this area are Ning, SocialGo, KickApps, etc. You identify your competitors as Microsoft (Outlook), 37Signals, WebOffice, etc. They are very different spaces.
Reichart: I live in a different universe of high accountability and transparency.I think you will find many of your fellow TechHuians live in that world. We donʻt use Ning for bank or hedge fund customers.
Reichart: Personally I would be a fan of using FaceBook as the front facing site and a dark net once people are "in".We utilize Facebook in various ways (see http://www.techhui.com/page/gigabit-hi) and will soon, thanks to new features from Ning, support Facebook login. Brian setup a Facebook "like" (fan) page, but we havenʻt yet had the time to populate it with content.
Reichart: Yes, complete versioning, locking, AND, every files tracks its intier access history... but wait there's more! You can syndicate files outside the secure vault of the system to the outside world, and Qtask tracks the IP access addresses for that as well.Qtask sounds like an impressive tool. We (Ikayzo, not TechHui) are going to take a look at it.
Reichart: Qtask is sort of like this site (Ning) for adult that have real work to get done...You are comparing apples and oranges. Ning is a social network, not a business productivity tool. The purpose of this site is to help techies in Hawaii connect with each other, share best practices, find out about new tech ventures in our state and stay informed. Although no system is perfect, I believe Ning along with the extensions weʻve added serve this purpose quite well. Weʻve found employees, customers and partners through the site, as have numerous other companies.
Reichart: This is not a slam of this system, but hey...we at least send you an email copy of the posts here so you are not forced to log in every bloody time LOLThis annoys me as well. They are obviously doing that to drive traffic, but Iʻd rather concentrate on value for the users. Unfortunately there are no API hooks that allow us to modify the messaging system, so we just have to deal with it for now. If and when there is an API hook or an option to change this, we will jump on it.
Les Vogel: Slam away - it's annoying to get emails that say come read what going on, many times a day. I just want to know. Why not tell me.Its to drive traffic, but I expect they will eventually provide us with an option to allow the emails to contain the content of the message. They have over $100M in funding and no longer have to support free sites, so we should be seeing a lot of new features soon :-)
