I also was at the industry development panel as part of the gaggle from Kauai. Hope to start some group think things here on Kauai. I am probably the least experienced out of everyone there but it was nice meeting people. Looking forward to continuing the discussion.

UH Manoa is setting up a "Makery"(tm) at Kehei Charter School to teach middle/high school kids.  Very exciting project.

Hackerspaces are indeed an emerging force in developing tech workforce and businesses. There are a number of $mil companies that have spawned from such places - and serve them as communities (SparkFun, AdaFruit, Makerbot Industries, etc).

There are two hackerspaces in development here in Hawaii - Maui Makers and HiCapacity.  The first is located on Maui, recently found a home sharing facilities with Community Work Day in Pu'unene.  The latter is based on Oahu and is looking for a home (see their ggroup for info on the hunt).

MauiMakers is currently competing in the Great Global Hackerspace Challenge to build an educational project using microcontroller and portable power source.  Our project is the Chill Box - a demonstration of cold soil agriculture. So far the ed aspect is us learning stuff. :-)

Making and learning together is the core value for Maui Makers. We seek to educate ourselves and community in high and low tech ways of making - from lasercutters & 3d printing to wood turning, metal bending and sewing.  Agriculture and sustainability are also of great interest to us. We see a close relationship between Ag and 21st century fabrication tech - and sustainability means more than just growing food and renewable energy. It means making and re-making things we need.
