TechHui

Hawaiʻi's Technology Community

If Neil would like to join us for a bit on July 13, it would be great.  I'm sure a group could be called together at another time as well.

I just read his technology and small biz platforms.  It would be nice to hear some specifics.

As a former teacher, I wonder how he feels about what Michelle Rhee is doing in DC?

How does he plan to raise standards w/o revamping DOE, including possibly laying off some teachers?  What about raising pay?  How do we pay for it?

Governor Lingle championed STEM skills, which obviously should continue, what can be done to improve this throughout the Hawaii system?  Besides STEM skills, shouldn't some form of entrepreneurship skills be taught in K-12?  I would suggest that it makes up the third leg of skills for our time.  (Liberal Arts, STEM, and Entrepreneurship)

Now that Maui has a UofH campus, will the standards be raised for professors?  Will they need to publish and do real research?  Will UofH Maui move from a skills for a job, to a more liberal arts (with a science / engineering bent)?  Or even a true science / engineering / applied ag facility? If it does, what will happen to the skills training mission that currently exists?

This is my opening set of thoughts, others?

How solid is the date? I'll be back in CA but could come back for this and a few other things.

My interest is a Fab Lab associated with UH MCollege - and a strong community involvement for k-12 & non-students (eg maker space) as well as people working on degrees.

Direction of UH/MC might be an issue the Gov would only encourage. If it is to evolve beyond skills-for-a-job towards more sci/engr, I'd suggest looking at the model of a PolyTech (Cal Poly SLO, or Cal Poly LA) which emphasize more practical engineering than research/publish.

Small business (ag, manufacturing, service, etc) is something Mr A talks about. I'd like to hear more and hear local biz folks grill him on particulars.
Do check out Neil's education platform. It will answer some of your questions.

Personally, in the context of promoting technology and innovation, some effort needs to be made to reach beyond the formal education system to engage regular citizens in understanding technology and venturing. This is one thing that is so impressive about the Silicon Valley. Lack of this knowledge and understanding in our policy makers, legislators, and the executive branch, and even in the Hawaii small and larger business community (e.g. the membership of the HI Business Roundtable, the bank and university economists) is what derailed Act 221 and will hold us back going forward. One idea that was articulated by Jay Fidell last year was to create a People's Fund - see http://thinktech.honadvblogs.com/2009/11/29/sunday-column-how-the-p... This would engage regular people in both understanding technology and venturing.

As an aside, there was a really interesting conference on Maui circa 1996 on Maui's HIgher Education Future. The TOC and summary from the proceedings is at http://mauienterpriseforum.net/mhef.pdf. Linda Lingle was Mayor at the time, and basically she did not pursue the recommendations since they were too threatening to the UH system.
Here is the link for the Education Platform http://www.neilabercrombie.com/index.php/education/
David:
People's Fund - I believe there are websites for non-local versions of this. There certainly are for loans.

Public involvement in Technology - One of the things I like about Maui Makers is that it's technology focused. In a sense so are the various Sustainability groups. (Though it's not what we often consider Technology) There are a lot of engineers I know in Silicon Valley who have monthly or weekly public-access shows. (Garrett & Reichart are rumored to be taping a pilot this week for a Cable Network)

MHEF Recommendations - Does Sol or Alan have an interest in something like this?

Education Platform - I'd like to see something a bit more radical, perhaps with input from the Gates foundation, but thats probably more than he'll be able to get done in his first term, so it's a step in the right direction.
I passed the July 13th request on to the Abercrombie campaign. That date would not work. They are asking if people would be willing to meet with him at the Abercrombie headquarters on Main Street, Wailuku at noon on July 6th. I thought that evening would be better and they are looking for evening dates, but I wanted to get feedback here for a noon meeting? We could also do a webex or ustream session at that time for people not able/willing to travel in to Wailuku at noon.
I would. I'll put a post on the main and ask folks to reply here.
Les: I just read his technology and small biz platforms. It would be nice to hear some specifics.

Their social media director just cross posted his tech plan to TechHui. They are specifically soliciting feedback and comments are enabled.

Neil was an early member of TechHui (first 500.)
I'll be on mainland next week but would be quite happy to tie in on ustream or webex. Hmmm- another plug for broadband in hawaii.
I'd be interested in hearing Abercrombie's perspective. Please keep me apprised of plans.
The July 12th date is not solid. Still waiting for a firm date.
Thanks for pointing this out. I encourage Maui people to contribute to the broader discussion.
