I've been playing around with Linux for a while, learning through trial & error and reading up on articles/forums. The problem is that not all documentation out there is clear to everyone (I get stumped every now and then over what the heck the man pages are talking about).

So I've been wondering... are there any LUGs that meet regularly on Oahu? I've been trying to look for one but have never found one. Someone on another forum had told me that we used to have one and they would meet at HCC, but they just sort of died out.

We are happy to host it at our office in the Manoa Innovation Center.

Sorry, this might take a while guys. I can't figure out the when until I figure out the where, and I'm having a hard time figuring out the where.
That would be awesome. Where exactly is your office (address)?

Then once we get a few more people involved we can set a date.

Awesome!

Now we have a where, just need a when. What would be good for everyone?

Also... there seems to be only 5 of us willing to attend so far. Should we wait until more are willing to attend or are the 5 of us a good group?

If you post an event in the calendar I bet more people will come. I suggest sometime after work in the middle of the week.

The time sounds good to me too. Any time in the late afternoon or early evening, Tuesday - Thursday sounds really good. I can post it on Twitter during prime time and we might get a few more interested people.

Alright....

So Laurence, we got a place, when would be the best time for you to come to present some of the topics you suggested earlier?
As far as scheduling goes, Tuesdays through Thursdays work best for me, anytime between 6pm and 9pm.

The earliest I could put together a presentation would be mid-January, as I'm currently on holiday shutdown. (I'm currently assisting the family Christmas Tree lot at Salt Lake Shopping Center - just look for the red or purple flocked trees..)

It'd be great if I could get a feel for what people would like to get out of these presentations, and of what topic areas are of most interest. (Java, Rails, PHP/Cake, Python/Django, Linux Security, etc..). That'll help me remember to point out quick tips to help new developers interested in particular niche areas.

Right now, I'm thinking the Intro to Fedora Linux is most appropriate to ensure everyone has a basic set of fundamental skills and knowledge: Linux directory structure, /etc, runlevels, sudo, nano, terminal and shell basics, and using the Yum package manager.

From there, I'd like to use another session to expand into basic software developer stuff (Eclipse, NetBeans, gcc); and further sessions could get into more specific topic areas like building/deploying Rails on Linux.

It's up to the LUG organizer(s) as to what presentations to schedule, and when. Consider me a Guest Speaker who can be scheduled to present on the topics mentioned earlier (or other similar topics if requested), rather than an organizer.

Aloha,

I would also be interested in a Linux user group. I'm sure after the holidays are over something could be pulled together. I'll look forward to seeing it on the calendar. My schedule is very flexible.

January sounds great! I didn't really want to put something together this month anyway because the planning and stuff would probably be terrible considering it's the holiday season. And you don't have to worry about any of the planning stuff, you can just be a guest speaker.

So I'm thinking Tuesdays at 6:30? Would that be alright, Mika?

For now, once a month would be ok until we get more people involved who would like to present because I don't want you to have to be up all the time, Laurence. I want you to enjoy the sessions as well. And I think that the intro to Fedora would be a great starter for our first meet.

So Laurence, just let us know when you're ready and we can set up a date in Jan to hold this meeting; and thanks for presenting to us. This will surely help a lot of people (especially me).

I'm looking forward to the meetings. It is very timely since I have just wiped my disk clean and installed Ubuntu. I still have to do Windows development primarily, but I'm finding that running Windows 2003 Server in a VirtualBox vm is about 5 times faster than Vista running on a laptop that was supposedly designed for it!
Yes. That time is perfect. Will it be once a month? The first week of every month?

If you put it in the TechHui calendar I know we will get some extra people.

So I'm thinking Tuesdays at 6:30? Would that be alright, Mika?
