From an interesting tweet by Scott Murphy: "Java has the most job opportunities, C# pays the best in Japan."

http://www.atmarkit.co.jp/news/200902/13/wp.html (Japanese)

The chart shows the average salary for C# developers at about $70K per year with Java developers trailing by about $10K. It also shows the annual increase in average salary from 2007 to 2008 for C# developers being many times that of any other language. One important thing to note when discussing Japanese developer or PM salaries is that people in Tokyo make considerably more (50%+) than their counterparts in smaller towns. The same is true in the US if you look at New York versus the rural Midwest or Hawaii.

I looked around to see what the trends are in the US and came across this blog post (posted April, 2008).

Based on the two articles, it looks like C# is hot in the US and Japan.
The TIOBE Programming Community index is not a ranking by salary, but by that mysterious measuring stick called "popularity". I remember reading that by "popularity", they mean mostly by how many times that language's name is used as a keyword in a web search. Java's still at the #1 slot, with C# coming in at #6.

Funny thing is, I also read recently in Dr. Dobb's I think that COBOL should be very profitable. Lots of legacy code to support, and the numbers of people who actually grok COBOL are dwindling... Can you say "job security"???

And yeah, there is way more money to be had in Tokyo than out here is Sapporo, the great white back o' beyond. It is sick. But that's just how it is, I reckon. Same would apply if I were stateside and living in, say, Bozeman, MT?
I worked in an Insurance company for a while writing Cobol to Java integration code! Definitely a market if you get your Cobol skills up :)
Hm... so COBOL would mean insurance, finance, military, right? And on mainframes???

Yes, screw the Web and the Intertoobs.. all we really need are punchcards. ;-)
