TechHui

Hawaiʻi's Technology Community

i received a request from lynn fujioka from isisHawaii for help with IT professional presentations at Jarrett Middle School. here is the request:

I recently received a request from Jarrett Middle School (Kaimuki district) to help them find IT professionals to speak at their Career Day event (Wednesday, December 3rd). The format will be 15-20 students in a classroom setting for three (3) 35 minute sessions.

Rather than the expected stand-up PowerPoint lecture, I was wondering if we could work with you or TechHui or anyone you can refer to do more of a hands-on or demo type activity. We may have access to a computer lab (may have to upload aps on all the workstations, though...not sure if they have a server in the classroom) and I still have to find out if we have Internet access (some sites are blocked by the DOE).

When we worked with Archinoetics and did the 3D animation workshop, the kids were talking about it for weeks! I'd like to get your ideas/suggestions...they're always exciting. Plus, you're young -- the kids need to see young, local professionals doing cool things. Like, maybe the Wii demo or something -- and talk about the technology and careers behind that.

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!!!!!!

the wii demo she's talking about was something i did for the college of....

i've given a speeches at Aiea high school and Roosevelt high school, and i think lynn's idea of doing a more hands on approach is a good idea.

we were wondering if others in the community would like to join in and help us support these cool STEM opportunities. please let us know if you would like to help out with this event or similar events.

Thanks for helping me post this announcement, Aaron. Mike Fuller (my contact from Jarrett Middle) says that the classroom we'll be using has computers but no classroom server. The stations, however, have Internet access. Not sure if this helps any but thought I'd let you know. Thanks!
We just added a note about this in the Site Info & Announcements section on the front page. Our ooi release will prevent me from helping anytime in November or December but I am happy to talk about local tech jobs at future career days.
Thanks, Daniel. Best of wishes on your release and congratz on your recognition award (2008 Hi Tech Leader)!

how many computers are in the classroom? and can we install software on the computers?
I think there are about 15 computers in the classroom and the application can be uploaded -- it just has to be done individually. They do not have a classroom server. They also have limited Internet access, if that's also needed. Thx. L

Just got a confirmation from Jarrett - they have 2 labs w/ 20 stations each (one PC and one MAC). If uploading an application, they request that the software be removed after the activity is completed. Mike is requesting a test download - should I send him the Scratch link or wait until you can get some commitment from volunteers? thx. L
