What are three good things that the UH ICS program is providing for its students?

If you can only think of one thing, that's OK too.

1.  Gerald is an awesome academic adviser.

2.  There's a lot of self-teaching, so I'm getting good at researching and figuring out coding problems on my own.

3.  The T.A.'s I've had so far were very helpful and approachable.

1. Teaching us skills in a field that will greatly change the future of technology.

2. Having many assignments where the result in a working program that you can interact and play with, as opposed to many areas of study where the goal upon completing an assignment is hoping to minimize the number of mistakes that can be marked on your paper.

3. Many UH ICS Professors seem to try to limit costs to students by offering free textbooks online and creating course content such as instructional videos which we can access for free.  This type of content has the advantage of being more engaging and easier to absorb than textbook lessons in many cases.

1. Being able to work with people of similar passions/interests. Opportunity to grow one's professional network.

2. Obtaining real world training that helps prepare us for interviews.

3. MSDN Access, allowing us to get experience with proprietary software. Gives us opportunities to become familiar with popular software used in the industry.

What are three good things that the UH ICS program is providing for its students?

1) I do like that we are able to do a focus, so rather than just a computer science degree.

2) The diverse amount of classes we can take.

3) I'm not sure if this applies to all professors, but so far the ones that I have had, they want to see each student pass their classes. They will make time and explain material so you can have a better understanding.

1. Being able to connect and network with students from all over the world. UHM offers a huge study abroad program; there are always new exchange students on campus every semester and being able to network in a setting like this is just amazing.

2. Getting help is always accessible in the ICS program. Gerald is awesome and easy to talk to. He's a great advisor and always looking out for the students. Gerald will squeeze you in between appointments and will try to give you honest advice on how to balance your classes out. T.A's would pull extra office hours to help students, and are super nice and easy to talk to.

3. The ICS program offers a lot to students such as clubs, lounges, and events (e.g. hackathon). There are numerous clubs on campus but those related to ICS would be ACM and Grey Hats. There are many of sharp students in these clubs and are more than happy to help you grow as a programmer.  The ICSpace is a great place to hang out, study and meet some of your fellow classmates. Gerald's mailing list always consists of opportunities and events that would help you with your professional profile.

1. Meet more people with the same interest.

2. Free licensed Microsoft tools

3. Become a better soft engineer by taking ICS 314

1. I like how most of the classes are hands on experiences with programming. I personally learn better by actually working with the thing that we are learning.

2. So far, the professors that I've had have been, not only knowledgeable in their subject, but glad to help if you are struggling with a concept.

3. The TA's are friendly and helpful. This is important because a lot of the lower level ICS classes have large lectures, and the professor doesn't have time for all of the students.

1)There is a wide variety of projects to be a part of and work on.

2)Opportunities to network and meet people in industry through various organizations.

3)They have a good group of teachers and educators creating a good experience for the students.

1. For the most part, there are many different Computer Science projects and courses, so finding an interesting one is no problem.

2. There are many other great, like-minded students and professionals to network with

3. Free professional tools.

I'm gonna change the question a bit...

What are three good things that the UH Computer Engineering program provides?

1) Free MatLab: Sucker for free things, and MatLab has saved my life more than anything else.

2) Design Projects: Although there aren't many for CE, I think the fact that we have to do design projects helps us develop skills that might not be taught in our "normal" classes.

3) An actual major: Kinda weird, but CE is still a relatively new and small major. It's nice that we have a pathway that has our interest in mind if we don't particularly feel like we fit into either EE or ICS.

1. Being able to meet other students with similar interests.

2. We are introduced to a lot of online resources, such as free online courses on specific topics or programming languages.

3. I am a computer engineering student and through the courses I've taken, I only learned C/C++ so I am glad that we are being introduced to other languages this semester.

1) Choosing from a wide variety of classes for your field of interest.

2) Meeting other ics students with similar interests and goals. Also working with them to accomplish your goals.

3) The different degree paths you can focus on. It's also really flexible if you want to double major.
