About Me:
Was first online in 1983 (no typo) with the pioneer dial up ascii social network (using Confer II) called The MetaNetwork out of Arlington, VA (it is still going--but using WebCaucus). Launched a BBS as part of my work as Director for Industrial Development for Queens County in NYC called The Economic Development Electronic Network (EDEN) in 1985. Moved from the Big Apple to the real EDEN/Hawaii :) in 1989. Taught first Internet class on Maui in 1990, launched a BBS at the Maui Research & Tech Center called HuiNet with 100 members in '92. Launched first website in 1994. For several years taught "Getting Wired for Business" and helped Maui's first ISP - Pacific Global Communications get started. Involved in TIGRNet in the late 90's, was streaming video of the Maui Enterprise Forum in 1999 (no audience then)--restarted last year. Started blog/podcast CoolProjectsMaui.com in Novermber 2005.

Leaving the Hawaii SBDC Network in September '09 to create Maui Venture Consulting and to upgrade CoolProjectsMaui.com incorporating both Web 2.0 and 3.0 elements.

Parents were diplomats, so I grew up overseas in Italy, Ethiopia, Barbados, Thailand and Malta. Received a B.A. from Yale University and and M.B.A. from New York University.

I have a music life - see http://myspace.com/igluau. Wrote my college senior essay on the interplay between art and technology as an American Studies major with a focus on music. Worked at WYBC FM learning how to work a razor with audio tape, studied sound engineering, interviewed top record producers for a radio documentary that was never completed. Still mess around with audio technology using Logic.

I also have a life partner who is a lawyer turned math teacher/church organist and a son graduating from UH as a Japanese major.

Developing A Local Stock Exchange

A group on Maui has been brainstorming and doing some research on creating a local stock exchange.

The original part of this is to create a more open match making entity using the SEC's intra-state exception to do direct public offerings.  This would create a more open process and allow non-wealthy to also engage in making small investments, plus provide liquidity to those making early investments.

State Senator Roz Baker has introduced a resolution, SCR134 to create a study…

Maui Supercomputer Upgraded, Renamed and Blessed

On Friday, August 21, 2009, the 50th anniversary of Hawaii becoming a state, the Maui High Performance Computing Center, which is 15 years old, received an upgrade and was renamed from "Jaws" to "Mana". Operated by the University of Hawaii and the U.S. Air Force Research Labs, it has regained the distinction, for at least a short while, of being the most powerful computer facility in the U.S. Present for the blessing were U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye, the original and current champion of having a… Continue

Very cool. I actually got my masters in 05 at ITP, though I wasn't part of the game design gang. The program is still going strong as a innovation factory, running experimental courses regularly -- I'm teaching a course this upcoming semester (if there's enough enrollment) on online identity. I'm glad to find a techie community on Maui now.

E komo mai David! Its great to see more people from Maui joining the community. coolprojectsmaui.com looks like a great site with lots of interesting information.

The FAQ is a good place to learn about the site. You may want to join some of the interest groups such as New Media, Renewable Energy, Game Developers and Internet Marketing.

We hope you find TechHui useful and invite others. See you in the groups and forums!
