We are having an informal discussion today on "Incubators, Creative Use of Space, and Co-working" at the Maui Research & Tech Center from 11:30 am- 1:30p.  AND also via Webex - go to http://CoolProjects.Webex.com.  The password is "aloha".

We are using webcams and muting when we are not speaking.  You will have an opportunity to "show & tell" if you like.

It is potluck or brownbag for those showing up face-to-face.

@REchung - I was a direct or indirect client of both for almost 10 years.  I am happy to share.  I agree the best ideas come from that interaction.  It came from a different perspective and not being in the "weeds" of the situation.  Those relationships provided some high quality business and technical advice.

I looked at the site and will try to stop by today and see it.  Similar setup in that you can rent space by the half day/day or week.  The rates of the above are a bit higher though.  Lots to talk about.

Today at a webcast/MEDB hosted meeting on Maui, the subject of co-working came up with the mention of Next Space http://nextspace.us/  which has 4 locations in California.  Looks like a nice place and the attendee who had been to one of them raved about it.

And the hackerspace here on techHui is sorta a meeting place for all our island hackers/makers.  I've got MauiMakers.com over here.  There are some people on Kauai and Big Island I've talked with about setting up spaces too.  Hopefully we'll get a bunch going, get UH to setup FabLabs and host several Maker Faires in the coming years.

Welcome Jason. It's rechung from The Box Jelly. I haven't been to Regus but have heard and read about them. Yes It is a similar concept in many ways.

Many times in coworking spaces instead of individual offices you have a large room with dedicated desks of hot desks (first come first served seating)

Are space now has a open floor plan with hot desks. When we move we will most likely have some types of meeting rooms as well.

I really think that meeting new people and the things that come from these interactions are the largest value coworking has to offer. Please stop by sometime. I would like to hear your experiences with regus. find us at theboxjelly.com

Take care

I was reading though the post and watched the video.  Is this similar to HQ Global Workplaces or Regus? (albeit they are the high-end of that industry).  They arrange spaces for small business (usually 1 to a handful) with the amenities being mentioned.  They are also used by corporate to support a project team in a remote city for a a month or more that needs space away from the client.   Depending on the culture of the location there can be the intermixing between the member companies.  I found that help and networking invaluable.  Does anyone else have experience with this?

It's been quiet here, but things are happening! The hackerspace group is very active, and visiting several locations. Meanwhile, there's a new "jelly" space, and an up-and-coming coworking space planned for Kakaako. My friend Burt and I put together a little video, with some background (including TechHui) and the latest updates, hopefully expressed well enough for newcomers!

Just in case I'm not the only one who missed this... there's like-minded talk on creating a Hackerspace in Honolulu in a separate group here on TechHui. They just had their first meeting!

Hi everyone, my name is rechung.  I'm part of a team that is looking to open a cowork space in Honolulu.  We just came back from New York and LA to check out a handful of spaces and I have to say they are doing great things out there.

Stay tuned for more marketing-type info, in development now (including a shorter version of that video you mentioned).

In the meantime, here’s some info/pics that appeared in HawaiiBusiness:

Hi Mary, I wish I could see the BAE Systems Innovation Center, but unfortunately I live in Japan now. Do you have a link to the center's website? I'm sure others in this group would be interested in learning about it. Aloha, Truman

p.s. I just discovered this video on your center by Jay Fidell.
