Hello everyone. I've been hacking Perl since the 90s. I use it mostly for Japanese text processing and flat file data manipulation. I have about an hour of Ruby under my belt and got the impression that I loved Perl more.

About Ruby ....
I've read some about Ruby, eg.
http://www.linuxjournal.com/issue/147
the first in a series of Reuven Lerner columns, but I haven't had a need for large works. Like a combination of DHTML pages, forms, and a database.

Also, since I'm usually just coding utilities for myself, things change. I regularly rename, reorder, and refactor, I didn't think I this was adivisable for a Ruby beginner, but it's where you start with Perl. So I continue to muck around with Perl, because of regular expressions and text files.

My first language was COBOL (even though it was already very old) so I was very happy when they let us learn Perl :-) We just saw Larry Wall talking about Perl 6 at the Lightweight Language Future conference in Tokyo. He seems like a very interesting guy.

I've been a long-time perl hacker, but ever since Ruby, I've used perl less and less.
