So basically I wanted to give people an introduction to the types of sites you can build with Drupal and what you can do.

The Acquia distribution bundles together many of the most-commonly used modules that facilitate user interactions. Some common modules *we* like to use are:

AddThis
Nice_Menus
Organic Groups
Private Messaging
Mollom (spamcatcher)
Google Analytics
Facebook-style status updates
Quicktabs
Nodequeue

For slideshows:

and then the whole Acquia bundle, including

admin_menu
advanced_help
apachesolr
calendar
cck
comment_notify
date
filefield
fivestar
google_analytics
image
imageapi
imagecache
imagefield
img_assist
jquery_ui
lightbox2
link
markdown
mollom
pathauto
print
tagadelic
token
views
votingapi
webform

I am very interested in using Gmap to add location information to different nodes and/or users and would love to see what you have done with this.

We do a lot of posting from the RSS feed directly to Twitter and/or Facebook Fans pages -- I think this is a great way to keep things updated all the time.

A member directory, member-driven site --- members may post events, blogs, forum, members-only section. Extended profiles. Acquia Marina theme with minimal changes.

Extended user profiles, which I use Views to create a directory of members.
A really simple Framework theme that's been tweaked a bit --- not a lot of design.

This is a basic school site with content types blog, event, announcement, pages, images.
We are using this to organize your fairly typical site around users: (parents, teachers, staff, general public, administrators) and allowing them to access school-specific news and pages.
Also some other sites in development (as of March 09):

Ubercart --- to handle membership fees
Private messaging, Organic Groups, Forum, and an "exchange" section for members to exchange items

E-commerce using Ubercart

To be a marketplace between academic and small business communities
