Introductions
As I am brand new to this group, I thought I might introduce myself. I once was a C programmer (eons ago) and now I am a technical writer for Sun Microsystems. Currently, I am writing about cloud services. Before that, I wrote tutorials on how to develop Ruby and Ruby on Rails apps using Netbeans. Before that, I was writing about JSP web apps. I have a blog at http://blogs.sun.com/divas which has been inactive since I was pulled from NetBeans Ruby and the divas were split up (diva#1 was moved to JavaFX and I am in the clouds), but I plan to start posting again.
Earlier this week, I popped over to Oahu for the most excellent Aloha on Rails conference. It was a welcome change from my reclusive, work-from-home, never having face-to-face conversations way of life. One of the take aways that I got is that I really need to get connected and I really need to get involved outside of my work environment, so here I am.

I am also brand new to this group. I understand what you are saying, because also find myself working not socializing within the community.
I am currently residing in Oahu, but in the process of moving to Hilo this month. Currently I am writing business process documents and promoting PMI, and MSCE workshops in Oahu. I am looking forward to living in a community again where I can socialize with local friends instead of just on the phone or email. The last 12 years after leaving Microsoft has kept me on the road as a consultant for over 150 banks in United States and Europe.
This last year I started working on getting connected, but again it’s through email and phone, so there needs to be a balance in our life.
Looking forward to meeting you and reading your article on cloud computing. -

Aloha Chris, I just joined the BIT group today. I'm the founder/editor/visual journalist for Hawaii 24/7 a news website. I've always been interested in tech, been working a lot this past year on my website hacking away at WordPress, figuring-out how to use tech to deliver news quickly instead of the old printing on dead trees scheme like newspapers. A long while ago I used to write tech reviews for Atari Explorer Magazine, the good old days when the editor would send me a piece of hardware to play with, keep and write a review on.

How great to find other techie writers on the Island. Baron, I totally agree that the old way of delivering information is no longer meeting our needs. For me the bigger problem is that now with so much info (good, bad, an ugly) available, how to help people find the good stuff, or how to get people to find your stuff.

there is a group of over 70 folks on the big island that meet monthly and discuss technology and help one other, the big island internet society. http://bialoha.ning.com/
i stared this big island group to share some of my knowledge from writing applications since 1985 and my extensive on-line marketing experience, to help big island businesses improve their on-line presence.
we meet once a month in person and the participants range from musicians to artist to techies to doctors to photographers and more but all looking to learn better ways to use technology and improve life here on the big island. -

Aloha, Chris! I should have read this before I responded to you earlier asking what you do. I run the Friends of NELHA which handles the education and outreach for the Natural Energy Lab of Hawaii and work out of the Hawaii Gateway Center right at the highway to NELHA. I also have a company called H2 Technologies and we focus on doing dual use research work for the Office of Naval Research in hydrogen production for grid energy storage and transportation fuels. I have another company that develops apps for Android and iPhone for helping people become better more efficient drivers which uses the measuring tools in your phone.
I am extremely interested in helping Hawaii Island make a shift to high tech and have just received some funds from County to do so. I'd like to put together a local hui to brainstorm ideas. -

I recommend that we gather up all the Tech Hui Big Island members for a BBQ or something where we can introduce ourselves to each other and discuss what we'd like to do as a hui. I'd love to see us engage some young entrepreneurs to be interested in high tech by showing them avenues for success in Hawaii (dual use industries, etc.)
When more people recommend getting together offline, let's organize this gathering.

A Barbecue like a great idea. Maybe we can try for mid July. Perhaps at a beach? Is Spencer Beach too far? It has barbecues and shade.
