Presenter: Rob Kelso, Exec. Dir., Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems (PISCES)
Topic: Settling Hawaii - Settling Outer Space, and Living off the Land
How can we live off the resources available to us in outer space? How can lessons learned here on Earth and in Hawaii help us prepare for space exploration? Rob Kelso will give an overview of the Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems (PISCES) and its upcoming projects. These include advanced laser communications, robotics, student lunar experiment, space agriculture, basalt construction and 3-D printing, all focused on answering these questions.
Rob Kelso has been the Executive Director of the PISCES in Hilo since November 2012. Before that, he had a 37-year career with NASA at the Johnson Space Center. For 21 years, he was in flight operations at the Mission Control Center starting with the first Space Shuttle mission STS-1, and was a Flight Director for 25 shuttle missions in the 80s and 90s.
After leaving the Flight Director Office, Rob served on Johnson Space Center senior staff as Deputy Director for Safety and Mission Assurance at JSC - responsible for directing safety and quality activities supporting manned space flight. One of the last jobs Rob did for NASA was to lead NASA’s efforts in the preservation and protection of the Apollo lunar landing sites on the Moon.
