About Me:
Sun-Ki Chai is Associate Professor and Graduate Chair at the Department of Sociology, University of Hawai`i. He has a BS in Mathematical Sciences, an MS in Computer Science, and a PhD in Political Science, all from Stanford University. His main theoretical interests are the study of formal, computational models of culture, as well as their integration with choice-theoretic models of action and network models of structure. His main substantive interests are in comparative national development, with more specific studies on the role of cultural institutions in the economic development of East Asian industrializing economies and on the social construction of ethnic identity and its role in collective action.
He is the author of the book Choosing an Identity: A General Model of Preference and Belief Formation(University of Michigan Press, 2001), the co-editor of the book Culture and Social Theory (Transaction Publishers, 1998), and has published articles in journals in the disciplines of sociology, political science, and economics. He has been selected over $3.5 in extramural grants in the area of culture and behavioral modeling and has recently patented a technology that applies social network and content analysis theories to a specialized web crawler and analyzer.
Thanks, Roxanne. Hope to have more of a chance to talk to you some more next time as well. Don't know exactly what I'll be able to jot down here, but will try to think of something!
Daniel: Thanks - I really look forward to hearing your comments about and critiques of the book. Thanks for setting up this great site, and for setting up shop in Hawai`i.
Aaron: Yes, remember you from last year. Am going to the dinner again this week - I'll be at the Korean Studies table - say hi if you're around there.
Welcome Dr. Chai. I've heard about your work from several colleagues over the past few months. I plan to pick up "A General Model of Preference and Belief Formation" this weekend.
