i saw your posting in the "Three bad things..." you are completely right, a senior level project (something thats longer than a semester and that you can specialize) is really important for employers to judge your capabilities. i'm not sure it needs to be required in the curriculum. but, i do think its a very good way to separate yourself form your peers.
