Maui TechOhana Lunch 12/15 - Presentation/Discussion on Future of Maui R&T Park

Maui Tech Ohana (see http://techohana.com)

Maui TechOhana is a program organized by a partnership between the Maui Economic Development Board, Inc., and Maui Venture Consulting LLC.

The meetings provide an informal networking opportunity open to anyone interested in Maui's technology industry. Events include a short presentation on a relevant topic in business or technology, followed by the opportunity to talk with others with similar professional interests.

Next TechOhana

The next TechOhana will be December 15, 2009. Please join internationally renowned urban planner and designer, Peter Calthorpe, to discuss the master plan design update for the Maui Research & Technology Park in Kihei.

More than 400 employees at 20 companies work in the Park’s five existing buildings—providing a solid core for expansion under the updated plan. Calthorpe’s specialty is designing new urban communities—including those with a regional employment base like the Park. New urbanism involves a diverse mix of uses, integrated in a walkable fashion.

Peter Calthorpe was named one of 25 "innovators on the cutting edge" by Newsweek Magazine for his work redefining the models of urban and suburban growth in America. His long and honored career in urban design, planning, and architecture began in 1976, combining his experience in each discipline to develop new approaches to urban revitalization, suburban growth, and regional planning.

Mr. Calthorpe has written technical papers, magazine articles, and a number of seminal books on sustainable communities and regional-scale planning and design. He has lectured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and South America. He has taught at U.C. Berkeley, the University of Washington, the University of Oregon, and the University of North Carolina. Over the years he has received numerous honors and awards, including appointment to the President's Councils for Sustainable Development.

Since forming Calthorpe Associates in 1983, his work has expanded to include major projects in urban, new town, and suburban settings in the United States and abroad. With groundbreaking work in Portland, Salt Lake, Austin, the Twin Cities, and Los Angeles, he has helped established the emerging field of regional design.

Thank you David.
Hope Maui Tech Hui folks will come to the Maui Tech Ohana lunch at the tech park today. You can think of techohana as a face-to-face version of the Maui Tech Hui group. We used to meet monthly (going back to 2001), but it has been more like quarterly for the last three years. Our last meeting was in August. I will be encouraging attendees today to join us here online. Go to http://techohana.com to sign up, etc.
