Ben - the best place to watch for makers stuff is the googlegroup and fbook group. Links to these are on the website.
Ben, et al... Maui Makers is meeting TONIGHT - thurs 26 sept
at the Pu'unene School main building, in the library. You can park in front of big white (dirty) building.
This is different than our usual (in cafeteria in back)
Ben,
there has been a LOT of discussion about a coworking space, but nothing has moved forwards. One big issue is location. If you have to drive 20-40 min to get there, it probably wont work for you. ... unless you were going there anyway. Kahului works ok for some things (like costco) as a fairly central, equally inconvenient place, but its not all to convenient for residents of kihei, haiku, or lahaina. and none of those work well for folks from the others.
Another issue has been the number of people that would regularly use it - which I guess is related to location.
Tech info sessions happen more or less down at MRTC area. Maui Makers (our local makerspace) is currently working on a new home after losing the meeting space we were using in Puunene (behind sugar mill). Maker Salon evenings may startup this fall.
Sadly, the HTDC location is NOT what one might call a "coworking"space. It's more like a large empty school classroom with Wifi. Very few people have ever used that HTDC space located in Kihei, and the requirements to use the space are ridiculously asinine. If anyone is looking for an inspiring or collaborative coworking space on Maui, there isn't one that is open to the public just yet. You're better off going to one of the many Coffee Cafe Shops that offer Wifi (Java Cafe in Kihei near Stella Blues, Wailuku Coffee Company, Maui Coffee Roasters in Kahului, Paia Bay Cafe, etc). Aloha
Hey Ben, as you can see, lots of interest, but it seems that we don't quite have the critical mass to get it off the ground.
Check out High Technology Development Corporation on Maui:
I think they have co-working space in Kihei.
Best Regards,
Jim
Please take this Maui Coworking survey - http://j.mp/mauicowork and share it with people you think might be interested. The results are coming in fast, so please complete the survey and share it too.
The Maui Coworking idea is once again gathering steam, we're looking for cool locations right now, considering starting a kickstarter, working on fee structure, features, funding streams, business model, etc. If you'd like to be involved please contact me.
Are there any news about co-working space in Maui? Does anybody know a place where I could rent a desk for 3 months with a decent internet connection – preferably close to the north shore? How about the Maui College.. do you have to be an enrolled student in order to use their facilities?
I'm tired of working alone from home… ;) really appreciate any advice.
Many thanks
