Aloha Tech Hui Linux Group !

We, www.HawaiianHope.org, need a Linux Guru to help out on a couple of our projects.

Hawaiian Hope is a Technology based non profit org. We are about to retool a couple of our projects and 2 of our options require Linux.

First, my confession : I’m an IT guy for 30+ years. Programming and so many other things. In all of those years I have used Linux only about 4 times. I feel so noobish ! Hehehe

Please look up our website to see some of the cool things we do. As an example, we are about to give away our 1,000th computer right around Christmas.

If you have some extra time to answer some questions, or would be willing and like to be involved in one of our really cool projects, please let me know..

We need to set up a couple of Linux Servers. Virtually no user interaction will take place once they are running, so i am not interested in "cute", only function and performance.

1) We need to set up GT.M (mumps) on one machine to do some testing. Unlikely that you have heard of GT.M, so here is some info :

http://www.fisglobal.com/products-technologyplatforms-gtm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GT.M

http://mumps.cz/gtm/misc/130510-1LinuxFileSystemBenchmarks.pdf

2) We need to set up Samba or something equivelant to be a file management server.

3) We need to set up "capitive portal" for WiFi.  Most of the recomendations I have seen say they need Linux

Some of our questions :

What do you consider the best version of Linux and why ?

What are some of the differences between versions ? Speed ? Cute gadgets ?

Are you willing to spend a few hours with us and set up a machine ? walk me through it ? possibly spend some time and help us out on a project ?

Thanks !

Here is my quick guide to choosing a linux distribution for a server.

Do you need GUI apps, support for recent hardware or recent versions of applications (e.g., released in last year) on the server choose Ubuntu LTS otherwise choose Debian Stable. RedHat and OpenSuse would be distant 3rd and 4th choices unless you are already familiar with their layout and packaging systems. For tinkerers there are MANY other choices (I like ArchLinux).

I hope that helps,

David
