Hosting Company reseller accounts? looking for comments
Hi,
I am new to techhui found U through PNM. I am a freelance graphics and web site designer . I also have a hosting/domain name reseller site - http://www.theadvantagehosting.com through Wild West domain, part of GoDaddy. I run it mostly to help my newbie clients and it is easier to manage them from one known hosting company instead of learning multiple hosting systems.
However when I started this reseller account GoDaddy was usually rated in the top 10 of hosting companies. I knew they had deceptive selling schemes and worse, but felt their tech support was pretty good and overall ease of use and depth of products offered compensated for that. I set up my site to be low key ez to use and steered my customer away from the junk products.
2 items I am seeking comment on: now GoDaddy is nowhere to be found in the top 10 rankings of hosting sites. Should I stay on with them or look for another reseller or is it even worth it.
AND being a twitter user (digiadvantage) I decide to start trying to promote my hosting company on Twitter. I made one small comment about accounts being hacked on big severs like GoDaddy (no secret here) and suggested using smaller companies like mine and suggest linux servers. Three (yes 3) days later I received a very threatening Big brother type email from infringements at GoDaddy: stating Wild West Domains, Inc. requires that you cease this activity immediately and remove all violating content. You are required to respond to this notification within 24 hours to address the situation. Failure to do so may lead to termination of service, initiation of a domain dispute proceeding, and/or civil claim filed with federal court.
Wow way to keep us little guys around GoDaddy. They win either way if I close my account they get my customers, if I try to promote biz on social media sites I gotta watch and worry about what I say. This may be just another GoDaddy sucks post.
Anyways not sure if to laugh or cry - a 3 day old post on twitter is dead and gone, thinking they must not have much to do in the Infringements department at GD

GoDaddy is well known as one of the worst hosting companies out there. They re-invest all back in marketing, very little in actual service, technology and support. There are also serious problems with their staff and numerous other items. For more on GoDaddy from their insider's perspectives you can read here: http://nodaddy.com/
I would recommend going with a hosting company that has been in business at least for a decade and has a well established name and history. -

You could try superb internet. They're a local company. Sometimes it's nice to be able to knock on someone's door when you need something.

Thanks for reply, I followed link from nodaddy to Chilling Effects Clearinghouse and added my "infringement" case to their database of quasi legal claims to cease and desist from bullies like GoDaddy.
I knew GoDaddy was not the greatest but now know they are hopeless.
I do not love Cpanel based hosting companies and without a friendly GUI my newbie clients would be lost.

I think you are working with much bigger clients, my newbie clients need easy, cheap shared hosting accounts. So now I will have to look into the best at the bottom of hosting biz LOL and thanks. Fatcow seems to top rated on the probably questionable survey sites, more LOL

As an alternative, depending on the number of sites you have, you can try a cloud computing solution. I have several sites and web services being hosted with GoGrid. Being a developer, this was a great alternative for us because it gave us great flexibility in what and how we wanted to do things.

Sorry to be a pill -- but seriously, what did you expect? You're self-promoting at GoDaddy's expense, of course they are going to terminate any existing business arrangements with you. Did you expect them to just take it on the chin and look the other way?
As for hosting providers with a solid SLA, I keep my eyes on the Cloud Providers like Amazon's EC2; and Heroku or Aptana Cloud if you want a pure Rails/Rack Hosting provider. If you're into rolling your sleeves up and operating your own servers, there are plenty of Virtuozzo-based shops like John Companies (fantastic service, I used them for years); and Xen-based shops like SliceHost.
If you want something quick and cheap, have a look at DreamHost. -

I am interested in talking with you. (shameless self promotion here to follow)
We are a non profit org here in Hawaii. We design web based data management software that other non profits use to manage all of their day to day operations. Our concentration right now being homeless shelters. (our system works HOT, looks could be improved though)
For the past 3 years we have used our web servers for basically hosting our own software and nothing else.
We are opening them up as full web hosting services and looking for people jsut like you.
