Just curious to know if anyone is aware of any initiatives to apply green technologies to Data Centers. Beyond that, I'm interested in finding out what large data centers are out in Hawai'i, and learning more about the associated costs with running a data center out of Hawai'i.

Generally looks like IBM is ahead of the pack.. I imagine they have some pretty bills to pay. Not sure about Hawaii, though.. are there any large data centers on the Islands at all?

Here is a funny IBM Green Data Center Man comic:
Thanks for the reply. I'd be very much interested in finding out if there are any large data centers in Hawai'i, and where they are. By way of offering some context for my question. We're working on a project now with the largest data storage and recovery company on the planet where the goal is to reduce the number of servers required for indexing and searching their data. We got our test results back last week and, out of the box, our search solution will provide them with an 8 to 1 server reduction, and with minimal tweaking we'll be able to get them to a 10 to 1 server reduction (90%), which for this initial phase will mean taking them from 600 search servers to 60.

This is a pretty significant solution for this company in terms of what it will mean in terms of reduced Capital expenditures, fixed Operational costs, and it's ability to help them grow their revenue stream. With the high cost of energy in Hawai'i, and my desire to get back home and do some business, I'm very much interested in exploring the possible applications for the technology in Hawai'i.

Aloha no,

DRFortress has a mission critical data center near the airport. It has biometric access, diesel generators, etc. They sunk $5M into upgrades a few years ago.
Very interesting. Thanks for the heads up on DR Fortress. I had an interesting conversation just now with one of out IT guys, and the 10 to 1 server reduction is using our Window's version of the code, we've just shipped them our Linux code which does about 25 - 30% better all the way around than our Windows code which actually means that we'll be able to provide an even greater server replacement ratio, which is a very exciting development.

Best,

Kimo
