SportsBlog.com: PHP Developer (with full stack skills) required

A personal note: Hi, I'm Peter Azuolas, the CTO mentioned below. I live in Honolulu, and would love to find someone local for the position.

SportsBlog.com is one of the fastest growing sports networks online, attracting more than 20m views per month and growing fast. In addition to its more than 15,000 fan-powered blogs, the network is home to numerous professional athlete blogs and thriving sports communities. In fact, more professional athletes blog with us than anywhere else online. And we’re just getting started.

The site is powered by our proprietary CMS and blogging platform that makes it easy for anyone to start a sports blog. This platform is in the middle of a major revamp, and we’re looking for an All-Star PHP developer (with full stack skills) to help bring it to the finish-line. As our first non-founder PHP Developer hire, you will be working closely with the CTO and will have a hand in shaping the tech behind SportsBlog.com (and the team that works on it!)

This is your opportunity to work in an dynamic, hyper-growth startup environment. Your work will be used by some of the biggest names in sports and by some of the most passionate fans out there. Although we have offices in New York and Nashville, this position is open to anyone in the US, as SportsBlog.com empowers its team to work from wherever they choose.

What you will do:

  • Create new applications using PHP and Twig
  • Support and expand existing high traffic applications and admin tools
  • Some low level CentOS server support and maintenance
  • Work closely with the CTO to develop and enhance both our front-end and back-end
  • Work closely with the Design and Ops teams to help spec out new products and features

Experience and Skills Needed:

  • Startup experience and the flexibility to handle the challenges that they present
  • Attention to detail and a careful mindset as you will often be working on staging and production servers
  • Deep understanding and experience with scalable web applications in PHP
  • Deep understanding and experience with MySQL in a sharded environment
  • Mid-level HTML and Javascript skills, with experience working with Twig based templates
  • CentOS and AWS experience and understanding of basic tasks and optimization
  • Git skills
  • Experience working with SAAS APIs
  • You have easy going personality and ability to prioritize tasks
  • You thrive working remote in a distributed team
  • Willingness to be on call for emergencies

Extra Points For:

  • MongoDB experience
  • Message Queue systems such as SQS or IronMQ
  • Some experience with Perl is a plus, as some of legacy systems are still operating and you will be upgrading them to PHP
  • We use NewRelic, so some experience with that is a plus
  • Familiarity with / Ability to create a VM based development environment

Where you will work:

Although we have offices in Manhattan and Nashville, SportsBlog.com empowers its team to work from wherever they choose. We have a completely cloud-based setup and rely on BaseCamp, Skype, Box and other tools to connect and collaborate. This allows our team to get the best work of their career done, and allows us to attract and keep only the best talent.

Our team members are distributed throughout the Valley, New York, Chicago, Nashville and Honolulu. You will be working primarily with our CTO who is based in Honolulu (and keeps HST hours), and with our Lead Front-End developer who is in Chicago.

We meet in person at least once a year at one of our offices, or at some place fun that we all agree on.

Compensation and Benefits:

SportsBlog.com offers competitive salaries, a vested stock incentive plan, and medical coverage. We also offer flexible hours, a fun working environment, the opportunity to work from home and paid time-off (including your birthday!). We are constantly working to add new benefits and we strive to keep our team happy and fulfilled.
