Makai Ocean Engineering, Inc. is a small business located on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Makai has two primary divisions – an engineering design division which focuses on the design of large ocean pipelines for Sea Water Air Conditioning (SWAC), Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC), and aquaculture, to name a few applications; and a cable software engineering division which develops software for military and commercial submarine cable planning and installation applications. Makai was founded in 1973 and has since established itself as the world leader in the design of large ocean pipelines and the provider of submarine cable planning and installation software. Our software, MakaiPlan, MakaiPlan Pro and MakaiLay, have become the industry standard in the submarine telecommunications field and we are continuing to improve our software for applications in the military and submarine power cable and oil industry.

Makai's submarine cable group is looking for an Software Programmer/System Analyst with good .NET programming skills to perform development, upgrade of visual basic code, maintenance, and offshore operation of our PC-based cable lay planning, simulation and control software. This is a full time permanent position. This individual will be part of our software development team and will provide customer support, installation and troubleshooting of software. Important assets for this position include: An ability to think clearly through technical problems, strong written/oral communication skills, willingness to adapt to a flexible work schedule, willingness to travel periodically, strong interpersonal skills, have experience with the Windows programming environment with the aptitude and willingness to learn more.

The qualifications that Makai values highly in candidate programmers/system analysts include:

  • Experience in .NET programming.
  • Experience with Linux.
  • Experience working on a team project using svn to check in/out code.
  • Experience in reviewing and debugging other developers code.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with GIS applications.
  • Willingness to provide software training to Makai software clients which involves periodic domestic and international travel.
  • Willingness to perform data-networking tasks and commissioning/installations of Makai software onboard ocean-going vessels.
