Need Help with diagnosing dead motherboard/CPU
Many years ago, I had a house full of computer parts and it was easy to test what went wrong if one of these parts stopped working. Now I live in a house full of laptops, ipods, and so on. My only desktop died right after CircuitCity went out of business (it was covered!) and so I am stuck. The motherboard or CPU or both is dead, and I'm running into two problems:
#1: Not really familiar anymore with the various new motherboard socket types so I don't really know what kind this is (it's an Intel dual core something or other)
#2: I don't have known working parts in order to distinguish which part is dead!
So I want to replace the motherboard and need to know if I also need to replace the CPU.
Can someone help? Perhaps you have a known working motherboard I could borrow long enough to see if my CPU is dead? Or another way to test? Willing to go anywhere on Oahu.

Here are two shots of the motherboard, I'm not sure if it's possible to see what kind it is from these pictures. Fans will power but no other evidence of life.

In my experience, it's unusual for a mobo or CPU to go bad, especially if it otherwise seems to power up OK.
Looks like you have 4 DIMMs installed. Have you tried reseating them, rearranging their order, or running the machine on a single DIMM? Have you tried reseating the graphics card?
On wonky non-POSTing systems that I've been asked to inspect, 3 of 5 times, it was something with the graphics card, reseating it or scrubbing the electric contact fingers did the trick.
'wish I had compatible hardware of that vintage to help out further, but I've been purging my lab to make room for new equipment.
If everything else is functional, you can probably upgrade the rig with a decent mobo+CPU combo deal from NewEgg for under $250. 'Looks like a standard ATX size mobo. Good luck!
