Event Description

When: Monday, November 14, 5 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Where: NELHA Gateway Center
Presenter: Jan War, Operations Manager, NELHA

The Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA) operates three deep seawater pipelines that suck up cold, nutrient rich seawater from depths ranging from 2000 and 3000 feet below the ocean's surface. This is a zone completely alien from the land and surface waters, and not easy to access. The Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) program at UH Manoa operates two 3-man, deep-diving submersibles. In early September, NELHA contracted with HURL to perform three inspection dives of its 18", 40", and 55" deep seawater pipelines.

Jan War, Operations Manager at NELHA, directed each of these dives in PICES V and was accompanied by a separate NELHA senior management staff member for each of the inspection dives. He will discuss the HURL program, present results of the inspection dives, show high definition video segments of each dive and the deep sea critters that grow on or nearby the pipelines. Come share the experience that he considers one of the highlights of his career.

Jan War graduated from Iolani Schools on Oahu and attended the University of New Mexico, where he majored in biology with minors in chemistry and English literature. In 1977 Mr. War worked for a private contractor hired by NELHA during the early Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion R&D program. In 1978 he was hired by NELHA, where he became its Operations Manager in 1984 and has continued in that capacity until today.

After the presentation, we will have pupus, drinks, and conversation. We are informal and it is potluck, so please bring a pupu and non-alcoholic beverage to share. Reusable plates and cups are encouraged, as is taking home your own trash.

Agenda:

5:00-5:15 p.m. Gather and Networking
5:15-6:15 p.m. Presentation and Q&A
6:15-7:30 p.m. More Networking, pupus
