Gubernatorial Candidates Platform on the Future of Tech

Dear HVCA Members and Friends,

Next HVCA luncheon will be held on Wednesday, July 21, 2010. We have invited the top three candidates for Governor of Hawaii to hear their platforms for how they will help continue to grow the State's technology economy.

Now, technology businesses generate $3.5 Billion per year in gross revenues comparable to the hospitality industry and construction. Tech jobs are high paying and create opportunities for our children that may keep them in Hawaii as opposed to leaving to find opportunities on the mainland. Governor George Ariyoshi had the vision to lay the groundwork for a tech economy. It has taken us 25 years to build tech businesses and continue the momentum. Now with the sunset of Act 221 at the end of this year, the State is in a precarious position. We could lose tech companies and lose the momentum of years of effort.

It will be up to the next Governor to assert leadership and do more than pay lip service or impanel advisory committees to continue to build our tech economy. What will they do? How important will building a tech economy be to the next administration? Do they have a plan, or is it all smoke and mirrors as we have experienced in the past?
