Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been used within government and the private sector for more than 30 years. Recent developments in web mapping are bringing GIS capabilities to the broader organization and to the general public through the use of web map services and focused web applications. In this three hour class you’ll learn about global and local map services and you’ll use the free ArcGIS Viewer for Flex to create your own customized, focused, web application. You can take your web app with you at the end of class.
Recommended preparation: No programming background is needed, though familiarity with reading and modifying XML will be helpful. The web apps you create will require Flash Player 10 to run and a web server (like IIS) to host. Developers do have access to the source code (not covered in this class) which uses the ArcGIS API for Flex 2.1 and Adobe Flex SDK 4.
