Topics
(1) Building Spatially Aware Apps with SQL Server 2008 and .NET
(2) Cross Platform .NET Development

Part 1
SQL 2008 contains spatial capabilities as part of its native features that can be used to quickly and efficiently build .NET applications that are spatially aware. .NET’s excellent tools for working with XML, Web services, and the ease with which you can integrate these with a number of free, very high quality spatial displays, along with .NET’s tight integration with SQL server make it a great platform for building geospatially-aware applications.

Part 2
.NET is more than a Microsoft product and C# is more than just a language. Find out how you can leverage your knowledge of .NET programming languages in a non-Windows environment. This is especially useful if you work in a research and development or scientific organization that relies on other platforms such as Linux for computing power. Find out about some of the tools to help you do this as well as where the most bang for your buck is in this arena.

Chris’s Bio
Chris started developing applications for the web using Perl/CGI on Solaris as a student programmer at University of Hawaii ITS over 10 years ago and moved on to working on Unix/Linux rendering systems for a major video game company. When he discovered ASP 2.0/3.0 and Visual Studio he realized where the power was to help him work on the kinds of things he wanted to work on. He has done a a lot of development in Java and even dabbles in development for Mac OS X and the iPhone, all of which puts him in a position to appreciate the power of Microsoft’s development tools and the .NET platform. He previously worked for CTA of Honolulu for 4 and a half years and is currently a software engineer for Referentia Systems, Inc doing primarily R&D projects for various DOD related research programs.

As always, free pizza, drinks and door prizes will be given away. Hope to see you there.
