The Renewable Energy Challenge – Sectors and Issues Facing Energy Entrepreneurs

The Hawaii Venture Capital Association will kick off a high powered series of luncheon meetings about Hawaii’s renewable energy opportunities and challenges beginning with the July 24, 2008 luncheon meeting at the Plaza Club. Our first event will include company representatives from some of the major renewable sectors that already have traction in Hawaii. They include wind, geothermal, solar, ocean and biofuel. The panelists will describe their respective sector and how it addresses the energy problems facing Hawaii. They will also discuss how their companies fit into the renewable energy continuum, their company’s business model and what problems their segment of the industry faces today and in the near future.

Our panelists include SOLAR - Mark Duda, VP of Finance, Suntech Hawaii, WIND – Mike Gresham, Vice President, UPC Hawaii Wind Partners, BIOFUEL – Bob King, Founder Pacific Biodiesel and Chairman of the Hawaii State Environmental Council, OCEAN – Frederic Berg, Project Director, Honolulu Sea Water Air Conditioning, GEOTHERMAL – Don Thomas, Director, Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes, University of Hawaii.

“Adopting renewable energy options to help wean Hawaii off of foreign oil is one of our most pressing challenges.” said Bill Spencer, President of HVCA, “The renewable energy entrepreneurs face major hurdles in achieving success and we think it is critical to educate the entrepreneur and investor community about the issues.”

The Hawaii Venture Capital Association, founded in 1988, is one of Hawaii’s oldest private non-profit economic development organizations devoted to entrepreneurship and capital formation.
