I'm a senior web application developer at Harvard University (I do many of the big sites, including www.harvard.edu and harvardscience.harvard.edu). I am currently getting a master's degree in computer science there and should be done in a couple of months.

Yes, we have a number of regular gatherings. The Java and Ruby developers meet monthy at the Honolulu Coders meetings at UH. The .NET users group meets regularly at the Oceanit offices downtown. There are also a number of general interest technology and business groups that meet regularly such as CyberPizza. Finally, a new gathering called Unconferenz started this month.

Both. This site uses a hosted solution called Ning. It uses PHP for the page rendering but all the core APIs are written in Java.

Do you all ever have in person get togethers -- sort of mini conferences/networking sessions -- since geographically everyone's fairly close by?

Also, what's the back end of the site? Java? PHP?
