Wondered if anyone out there has used a free forum plugin.  I've been playing around with Mingle but wanted to get some feedback on anyone who has a working forum and what plugin was used.

You could try bbPress if you need something free and simple.

Thanks Josh,

Have you used it?  Is it pretty stable?

Wow, sorry for the long delay in responding. :)

It's hard to compare to say vBulletin, but for a simple WP tie-in, it's a beautiful plugin. :)

This is the same forum plugin that is used on Automattic's wordpress.org

NP Josh, life happens.  I've been testing out Mingle Forum for now.  For newbies like me once you spend the time configuring and testing and actually getting a plugin to work, you feel like you can't afford to try another plugin and learn it's idiosyncrasies.  I will keep bbPress in mind.  Mahalo!

Hi Fred,

Here's a fairly recent list: Top 5 WordPress Forum Plugins.  Full disclosure: I haven't set up a forum, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Good luck!

Thanks Marcus.  I really appreciate the tip.  Will look into it.
I have recently been using WP Forum Server, and so far am really liking it better than some of the others I have tried.
Thanks for the tip Daniela.  Just curious what other forum plugins have you tried?

I have used Simple Press which I thought was too complicated, on both front and back end.  It also screwed up my custom login options, I can't remember what the deal was exactly, it was last year but I think it clashed with Theme My Login and some other plugins and custom options I had with user logins.  I ended up just getting rid of it.

I also used Buddy Press which used to be terrible!  But buddypress is rockin now that it is more supported however here is no point in installing buddypress just for the forum, BP is a space hog.   I do use a BP forum on a  WPMU site and I am liking it a lot better now but only after I customized it so if you are comfortable with CSS you can do a lot with it.

A really good one I like as a user is Vforum, but this is not a plugin this is a premium option. (although there may be plugins that help integrate, I haven't checked that yet)  http://www.vbulletin.com/   You can see it being used on organicthemes.com .

Everytime I am on a forum and I think, "I like this forum", I look at the source code and see that it is vbulletin.  It is so clean and easy to use.
