Everyday, companies like Zynga, Pinterest, Facebook, and Instagram all try to mess with peoples’ heads, leveraging novel ideas from psychology and neuroscience to induce incredible engagement in millions of users while generating billions of dollars.  

How do they do it?

At the intersection of psychology, technology, and business is an emerging field of thinking called “Behavioral Engineering.”  Behavioral engineering encompasses the design of user experience, behavioral economics, and a dash of neuroscience.  Understanding how users make decisions and why they make them is powerful.  With this knowledge, companies can build more effective, engaging products, and individuals can build healthy habits in their own lives.

About the Speaker

Nir Eyal (@nireyal) is an investor and entrepreneur who has sold two technology companies since 2003.  His last company, AdNectar, received venture funding from Kleiner Perkins and was sold in 2011.  Nir has spent most of his career in video gaming and advertising industries where he learned, applied, and at times rejected, the techniques used to motivate and manipulate users.

Nir blogs about behavioral engineering at www.nirandfar.com.  Nir is also a contributing writer for TechCrunch, Forbes, Psychology Today, and a frequent speaker at industry conferences, universities, and Fortune 500 companies.  Nir has also served as a mentor at several incubators including 500 Startups, Founders Institute, Innovation Endeavors, and the Thiel Fellowship.
