Finding Foreign Markets

Most of you have good products, but how do you go about finding overseas customers? The Hawaii Pacific Export Council is a non-profit, all-volunteer group that can help you get into foreign markets. Ask your questions about foreign sales and we'll try to help you get started on the answers.

Hi Steve:

Great idea to start this forum.  If the U.S. is going to work its way out of its debt overload to a new prosperity, its companies must become more export oriented, and companies in Hawaii will need to do likewise.  Besides looking to find customers overseas, export-oriented companies should also keep in mind that licensing technology and IP rights to innovative products is an alternative business model to manufacturing and distributing products for overseas sales.  In the IP Management Course offered at KCC Continuing Ed on Thursday eves 6-8 pm, we will cover IP Management for Technology & Innovation Products in Session #7 this Thurs 10/27, Branded Products in Session #8 on 11/3, Media & Software in Session #9 on 11/10, and Foreign IP Rights in the last Session #10 on 11/17 ($35 per session, call 734-9211 to register).

During this Depression, the savy Hawaii business owner ought to be looking outside the U.S. market to survive and even prosper. The action cannot and will not be here in this economy for the next several years. Just look at the very recent international business successes of Hawaii's Cyanotech and Sopogy. I have just returned from a biz trip to Southeast Asia and Japan and will tell you that you are missing the boat entirely if you simply focus on the Hawaii or broader U.S. market--those economies in Southeast Asia are roaring ahead and even Japan is starting to step forward a bit.
