In 1996 the fastest computers in the world reached about 1 teraflop in performance.  Today you can hop on EC2 and use one (or say, 8) for $17 / instance-hour.

These use NVIDIA GPUs with their CUDA API.  So taking advantage of the performance would require some custom coding.  But you can't beat that price.

That is mind blowing. Now 15 year old hackers can access yesterday's supercomputing speeds for less than their weekly allowance!
