iPhone App Competition for Hawaii? Quick Way to Get UH Undegrads Build Experience in Software Dev for Commercial Products

Dan Leuck and I were talking a while back about this. I wonder if some angels here in Hawaii could underwrite summer programs that would select two or three teams from UH or other local university students to develop a commercial iPhone app over the course of a summer. This could be a paid internship. The iPhone market has really blown open the commercial software market because it completely solves the distribution platform problem and it lays bare how cheaply and quickly quality apps can be made given the right planning and development. You could probably fund each dev team for $8k or less for the summer. Assign each team an advisor who is an active software engineer here in Hawaii and a marketing / business person to help them think about their product. Just a thought.

I'd be willing to help with this, I'm a freelance iPhone application developer here in Oahu :) http://software.logichigh.com

hey alex, i've been working with the UH ICS department on a coding competition. i even secured some pledges from the local dual use industry to support it. the competition didn't happen, but i think there is renewed interest.

what UH students were you planning on targeting?
are you connected to the UH ICS department? if not i can introduce you around

anyway, let me know how you plan to proceed. thanks, aaron

Sorry for the late replies on this. Daniel, could you put me in touch with Kaveh? Kelvin, thanks for the offer. I may be back in touch if this picks up steam.

Kaveh Kardan, had a class during the Fall 2008 semester designing games for the iPhone/iPod touch. A friend of mine who was in the class designed a memory game using Japanese Kanji which could be a seller in my estimation. I think and I am not sure on this but whatever the students conjured up in Kaveh's class is property of the university.

I would be interested in helping out, as well.

I just think it would be a lot of fun and highly functional. The type of coding required for iPhone apps is specialized but not so specialized as to be without broader uses. It also really would force people to think about the whole package -- UI, security, functionality, etc. Dan, I'll ping those guys in the next week or so.

This is a great idea! You may want to ping Philip Johnson or Dan Suthers about it. Oceanit or Blue Lava would be good to approach on the corporate side.
