Facebook: Grow Up

Note: I write this as a fan and frequent user of Facebook. In addition to helping my family stay connected with friends around the world, the site has helped our company find new customers and team members. I wish them well. That being said, there are many areas where FB really needs to get its act together.

Our company does a fair amount of advertising…

Social Media Engagement -- or How I Learned to Love Oversharing

It's a fun and fascinating part of my job to dream up of new ways to use social media for communicating and engaging with digital users. And with mobile devices, opportunities for social connecting are infused in every movement and moment. So much so that talk of social media addiction is sometimes greeted with a glazed-eyed blink before those eyes turn back to a Facebook screen.

Obviously, some deep-seated psychological need is being tapped via social media. And of course,…

The Inside Story on Google+

There has been a flood of news on Google+, which is to be expected whenever a company as big as Google rolls out a new product.  This piece in Wired may be the definitive article to date: Inside Google+ — How the Search Giant Plans to Go Social

It was written by Steven Levy, a respected tech author who also…

How does Facebook continuously update without breaking down? (VIDEO)

For a company devoted to making people's lives as transparent as possible, Facebook is extremely secretive.  So it was a rare treat to watch this presentation by Chuck Rossi, a release engineer: How Facebook pushes updates to its site every day.

I thought it was fascinating as Rossi showed screenshots of the myriad tools and processes used by the world's…

Posted Mathogen to Facebook

Today I posted Mathogen to Facebook. It's called My Math Coach. I'm happy to announce that it's now availabe 24/7 and completely FREE. If you like the game, please tell your friends with kids. I need 10 monthly users on Facebook before I can get into the Facebook app directory. If you're feeling kind please "like" the app :)

Mathogen is the first math game that doesn't suck. Mathogen is a speed based puzzle game. Pop the numbers falling out of the sky before they fill…

FaceBook Unfriends Google.. via email

I'm sure many of you have heard that Facebook now plans to offer an email service.

Clearly part of this is to undermine Gmail's presence (though I'm skeptical at how successful it will be.. Gmail is in my opinion the best large-scale web application currently in existence).

What's little known is that while Gmail is wildly successful at ~190…

Twitter on a roll, Facebook not so hot in Japan

Both Twitter and Facebook have seen a lot of coverage in Japan so I thought I would share some of the things that I've learned about these two services and how they are doing.

Twitter in Japan

Twitter seems to be all over the place in Japan. Just recently, Fuji Television made "Twitter" the center piece of one of it's newest TV series called, "Sunao ni narenakute". The TV… Continue

Facebook Exodus Non-Story in the NYT

I normally don't comment on this sort of thing, but I received numerous links to Virginia Heffernan's vacuous NYT article titled Facebook Exodus. It must have been a very slow news day. By Virginia's own admission at the top of paragraph two, Facebook is growing at a furious rate. ComScore puts last month's unique visitors at 87.7 million and monthly growth at over 20%. To what exodus is she… Continue

Hawaii Science, Tech, Engineering and Math Workforce Development Survey On Facebook

The STEM Workforce Development Program at UH-Manoa needs your help. We are currently trying to find out how well science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) school programs and activities have prepared Hawaii's students for careers in these fields, and discover what happens to former participants after they enter the workforce.

If you attended any school in Hawaii--any grade between kindergarten and graduate school--we would greatly appreciate it if you would take our survey,… Continue
