Thanks. Feels good to be (almost) back.

Yup, UH ICS alum. Was there 95-99.

Any place you know of that I can find info about companies even if they're not hiring? Any that you would recommend looking at?
  • Justin Goshi

Thanks. This is very helpful. Lots of things for me to look into.

Oh, and I just applied to your company :)
  • Hong Nguyen

Thanks aaron for the tips! I will definitely try to keep up my blogs though I am only good with bad english! lol
  • Ira

Aaron! Thanks for the warm welcome. It would be nice to put the HQ in Hawaii, but unfortunately, we're located in Silicon Valley. However, the development team is located in Japan so Hawaii is a good place to set-up some kind of office. Let me know if you know a good SW system architect.

Aloha Aaron, thanks for welcome. I'm a Xerox guy, so naturally I gotta represent (icon)!

Aloha Aaron, yes I am moving too. We should be there by the end of December: no more cold winters!!
  • Bill Gundry

Thanks for your greeting, and yes semi-retired is a wonderful thing! At the moment I am more retired than semi. I would be interested in working with Maui based start up that are looking for some pro bono help

Yups, I'm an uh ics alum. Grad bscs in fall of 02. I actually remember a few of you from school.

Aloha Aaron, sorry its taken me a lonnnngggg time to reply, I've been on and off the island quite a bit these last few weeks. We're not all copy machines and as a matter of fact, we've been successful in the printer market software, and consulting or managed services. Did you know that Xerox manages Microsoft's worldwide printer fleet of over 700 Xerox devices and approx 200 non-Xerox devices. We'll monitor the fleet, maintain supplies, and provide help desk services to both Xerox and non-Xerox equipment. Did you know Xerox sells its own branded HP toner?

Trying to cut down on physical output? Save paper? Cut costs? We've got software solutions such as Docushare that allows an enterprise to manage their docs online, provide version control, and a whole lot of other bells and whistles that allow companies to effectively manage their documents online thus reducing paper usage.

As far as the business model, its a little tough to elaborate on a simple level. Xerox is huge and each solution that's proposed for a client is unique. But, like buying a car you can bet that its the extras that are offered that usually make up the revenue ie financing, supplies, different options, and service.

Yes, anything science sums it up. if you hear of things at the U or elsewhere along this line (lectures, demos etc) let me know - or pas on some web links. Newer to the island...thanks.
  • John Franklin

Hey Aaron, thanks for the welcome! I do work with Dave but not sure if he will be involved with the ICS at UH. Good to meet you!
  • Sandi Kanemori

Hi Aaron, thanks for the greeting! Good question. Non-profits aren’t generally a good fit for the Manoa Innovation Center incubation program. Basically to qualify companies need to prove that they have a leading edge product or innovation that is feasible yet with acceptable risk. Feel free to check out our website for more info on the program, qualifications, and if you’d like to even download an application!
  • Troy Tolle

Thanks for the welcome Aaron. It seems like this is a pretty tight but active community. I am interested to see what is discussed.
  • Vern Takebayashi

    Hello Aaron,
Thanks for the welcome. It is nice to be here. I see that you use Flash/Flex. I am thinking about starting to use Flex, and I know very little about it at this point. I had heard that with Flex 2 that some applications had memory leak problems. I also read that with Flex 3, that memory leaks were not a big problem. Has this been your experience? If there are any good web sites with Flex tutorials or books that you find useful, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
  • Monir

Hi Aaron, Looking forward to the Eclipse Usergroup event. Yes, CSDL leads the way!!!!
  • Vern Takebayashi

Thanks for the reply Aaron. I will join the Flex group and ask there.

    Aloha

    Nice to meet you!

I am creating an MMORGP game with a purpose of creating a better world through education and technology. We're in need of very strong flash programmers.

Do you know flash and want to help the world or know of anyone who does? And please send examples of flash work.

Good to meet you! I grew up in Hawaii Kai, near Referentia's offices, btw.
  • Bill

great to meet you Aaron! I see you are involved at UH.
  • Bill

Great, well there must be a story behind that since Referentia is the creator of quite a bit of educational software.

No, but this week I am finishing a masters in CS from GWU, and next week I am moving to the islands! Can't wait...
  • Jeffrey Char ジェフリー・チャー

Thanks. It's great to see that the tech community in Hawaii is alive and well.
  • Joseph Beemer

Nice to meet you! You seem like a very active person in Hawaii's software community :) I also enjoy learning new things every day. I'm hoping to find some time to learn Ruby. My friends tell me it's a very good language for hacking!

  • Ashish Babbar

    Thanks Aaron. How are you?
  • Vern Takebayashi

    Aaron,

Sorry, I missed your comment asking about the IT Academy. I was very busy heading a committee to revise our campus' Strategic Plan document, and I just wasn't checking into TechHui enough.

Anyway, we just submitted a NSF grant proposal on May 12. If we get this grant we should be able to start the IT Academy program. Initially, the program would involve two public schools. Instructors from my campus, Honolulu Community College (HCC) would teach some of the lessons in the high schools and also train the high school teachers. The idea is to offer two year-long courses at the high school level. The first course would be an introduction to using basic computer applications (word processor, spreadsheet, database, simple web pages) with an emphasis on math and science applications. This would help schools to fulfill STEM requirements. The second course would be an introduction to programming, that would once again have math and science applications.

At HCC I teach a CS0 introductory programming course using the Python language. Although this course starts off with the basics, it winds up with the students writing a program that does XML parsing to write to either a HTML file or another XML file. If we expand this to a year course (instead of a semester) at the high school level, I would probably have the students write to both a HTML with CSS (as an example of producing formatted text files), and an XML file (for the semester that just ended the students wrote to a Flex .MXML file).

What I would like to do with this Academy model is have the students gain experience with the basic computer applications and with programming so that we can cover more programming (even for students who pursue just a 2 year associates degree). In particular, once the students reach our campus, they would take ICS 111 (Java), a databases course, and then a web programming course (using PHP and probably also Rails).

Anyway, I apologize once again for not being active and not responding sooner. If it looks like we are going to get the NSF grant (I hear it takes 5-6 months to hear anything), I will be asking TechHui members like you what kinds of things to include in an IT Academy program. I would also be asking people to serve on an Advisory committee for that program, but at this point it is premature to be doing either.

I would be happy to discuss things further if you have any questions/comments.

    Vern

    Aaron,

Yes, I will be sure to let you know as soon as I hear something. Just keeping my finger crossed.

    Thanks for your interest,

    Hi Aaron,

the http://uhicsalumni.org/ website linked in your profile seems to be broken. I didn't even know there was a UH CIS alumni site :)
