Some of my old co-workers are part of a new start up called <a href="http://www.factual.com" target="_blank">Factual</a>, which is an Open Data platform. Don't know much about Open Data but supposedly it takes what open source did to software and applies it to databases and information. Anyone have any particular experience or opinions about using Open Data for their web applications.

Is there an employment web site (e.g., Monster) that seems to be the most popular among programmers and database professionals in Hawaii? I've tried Tech Jobs Hawaii and the University of Hawaii without much success. Is the pool of available talent small or am I not using the best venue? If recruiting is best done by "word of mouth", does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

I've been trying for years to get my employer, team members and main client to let me set this up but I hear a variety of excuses including, "How can we enforce it when users can just modify the database directly?", "It would be too much trouble to get everyone on-board." and my least favorite, "This means that we'll have to change." I think that they are lulled into a false sense of security by the fact that we have a good database backup plan in place, but they apparently don't understand how…

I think that they are lulled into a false sense of security by the fact that we have a good database backup plan in place, but they apparently don't understand how much time and resources will go into restoring a 200GB database backup on a different machine just to retrieve a 12KB stored procedure that somebody fat-fingered.<br />

To me it just seems so easy! I keep all of the SQL code for the projects for which I'm the only developer in SourceGear Vault. I use <a href="http://weblogs.sqlteam.com/billg/archive/2005/11/22/8414.aspx">ScriptIO</a> to generate deployment packages to push code from test to prod.<br />

I'm planning on writing another email plea but first I'd love to hear from anyone else in the group that has experience with database source control. What databases are people using?tag:www.techhui.com,2008-03-29:1702911:Topic:102232008-03-29T17:13:11.027ZSam Chepkevichhttp://www.techhui.com/profile/SamChepkevich
Sorry for being long winded. I guess a good starting point for this group would be to find out what databases people are using. I currently use Microsoft SQL and MySQL databases at work. In the past I have used Oracle and DB2. I am hoping in the near future, we will be moving to the Oracle platform at work also. We went through a software selection process and we are close to getting Oracle's E-Business suite for CRM, manufacturing, Accounting, HR, BI and most everything else in the…

MySQL is a favorite because it is Open Source and there are many Open Source packages that use it for a back end such as the Intrusion detection system Snort. I like Oracle too, I used it predominantly at my previous job. At the time it was Oracle 9i.<br />
<br />
I like Oracle because of the vast array of features such as InterMedia which is now called Oracle Multimedia that is available in the enterprise products. You can do some pretty cool things with images such as converting image formats and sizes. I currently have 10g installed on a personal server for my personal projects, even though the strength of 10g and 11g are the grid capabilities, I am currently not using the grid feature, The one thing I would really like to check out in 11g is the lock box. Is anyone out there using 11g and the lockbox feature?<br />

I know there are other databases out there such as PostgreSQL, Firebird and Ingres has also been moved to Open Source. Also we can't overlook DB2 from IBM, that I have previously used. Then there are the multivalue based databases like Pick. So what are you using?
