Mika, additionally, if you are doing any type of VDI deployment on thin clients, the combination of Hyper V and Citrix is actually superior in our opinion to Vmware's VDI solution. We have seen a lot of interest in the thin client model (finally).

Hi Mark! We have a customer doing a lot of work with Hyper V 2 for banks. He has the same opinion (game changer.)

Hyper V 2.0 is very strong. In a windows only environment there really is no reason to deploy vmware (unless you have already deployed it and have trained staff around it). We use both vmware and hyper V. 2.0 HV is a game changer.

I think that vmware has stepped up their game. I wonder how much competition they expect from hyper-v.

Give them false details and you don't have to put up with sales calls.. I get so cheesed off with companies that do that. I really have no interest in speaking to Salesmen unless I specifically initiate it. I like to test software on it's own merits rather than all the half-truths a salesman might come up with to get a sale.. :D

FYI, Vmware has webcasts about their various products/services. Be prepared to get a sales call afterwards though. If you're interested, visit http://www.vmware.com/a/webcasts/ to register.

FYI, last chance to register for VMWorld 2009. http://www.vmworld2009.com/
Funny, they have a "genius bar" of vmware gurus. Wonder if they have a Geek Squad of hardware techs...

Paul, I think that you've hit an important point. One of the main advantages to using virtualization is that you can test the software upgrade/patch on a production image before making it live. It's a huge advantage. I can't tell you how many times windows servers have taken a dump after installing security fixes. As for linux, it seems like as soon as you get a box up and configured there's a new version out. Not to mention, those backup images are good to have when you accidentally botch the system.

Just a thought.

Harley, I've done similar in the past. Dev team was separate from mine, we handled installs and the day to day running of the servers. With some new platform creation it was easier to setup and test a new install inside a clean test VM environment and when were were happy with it, take an image and deploy it onto real physical servers. The only thing that was unreliable was the network card setup but we had iLO and NOC engineers on site who could fix that problem.
With a fair amount of jiggling around we managed to use dd through an ssh tunnel to transfer a FreeBSD 3.something into a new VM. The DD'ing through a tunnel was the easy bit, the harder bit was getting that version of FreeBSD to be happy with the virtual hardware. Unfortunately upgrading to a newer version of FreeBSD broke it every time :D

hi.
I am still new to virtualization software... well short of dual booting multiple operating systems. I have been talking with some vmware users and for development, they prefer to use vmware to layout a specific application, save off the vmware session to re use else where. seems a little too ideal to actually work, but they claim it does.
