Has anyone else noticed that over the past few major versions the iTunes UI has continually degraded into a nearly unusable state? Discovery of core features is difficult and core tenets of UXD such as the Principal of Least Astonishment have gone out the window. Scrolling behavior is inconsistent, navigation changes radically with each release, its no longer obvious how to list the shows for a season in your library...the list goes on. What is going on with this app?

I'm a web user interaction and user experience designer, social media consultant & technical trainer with ten years of experience in the web industry, proficient at front-end development with standards-compliant, semantic HTML, CSS and JavaScript including AJAX, jQuery etc although I'm trying to stop doing coding and focussing on design. Plenty of private sector and government experience.
I had the luxury of being able to hire interaction designers, visual designers, prototypers, icon designers, illustrators, sound designers etc. when I was at Microsoft but my feeling is that here in Hawaii a "UX Designer" needs to be a jack of all trades... true? Typically, my role at Microsoft was to create a set of wireframes that then got translated and animated into a GUI that I directed but really was an orchestration of specialized talent.
Does a UX Designer need to be a jack of all trades here or are there opportunities more like an art director or interaction director? interesting Flash apptag:www.techhui.com,2008-07-25:1702911:Topic:179862008-07-25T19:28:15.151ZGus Higuerahttp://www.techhui.com/profile/GusHiguera

From just the UI perspective, it has a wizard for 5 steps with an interesting alternative to tabs or a bread-crumby road map: horizontal bars that list top to bottom, with the relevant page below the selected bar (like a window). The progression this suggests is more natural than tabs, while still providing random access and a clear sense of location and direction. I love the use of pop-up definitions and readings on this site (warning: great functionality, but fugly design.)

Rikai allows you to paste in Japanese or Chinese website URLs and get instant mouse over pop-ups with readings and definitions for all the kanji (ideograms.) For someone studying Japanese or Chinese, this is an invaluable tool. It allows you to read websites such as asahi.com before you know the 3000 or so characters…

For someone studying Japanese or Chinese, this is an invaluable tool. It allows you to read websites such as asahi.com before you know the 3000 or so characters necessary to read a typical newspaper. You simply move your mouse along the lines as you read.
I think its very interesting that the iPhone has decided to use drag and drop for screen scrolling. I wonder how they will support the more common uses such as text range selection, which is a pretty important feature. Have they shot themselves in the foot in terms of making the more common uses of drag and drop less intuitive?
