you are way to modest Patrick... I heard about you surfing the big waves and benching 4 plates... rumors? ;-)

I can't commit to being fit... though I can commit to Papa Johns regularly, and sometimes McDonalds, and that darn Jack in the Box. Do I qualify for this group?

Curt aloha! ;-) Wow 2,110 calories in a liquid form alone! That's quite a bit!
You are absolutely right though... we can make improvements just by cutting the juices and sodas. What's up with soda consumption in IT field eh?

Juices at least carry some nutritional value (tho quite high in sugar), soda is just empty calories...

15 pounds in 6 week... and another 20 pounds in the next 9 weeks! That's very impressive! Good for you!!!

Working in IT can be hard, we nerds get glued to the computers and don't notice hours.. days going by ;-) The balance is a must.. I beilve *health* is the most precious gift and we have to guard it at all times.

Keep moving and drop the pepsi ;-)

Paul welcome to the group! I'm so glad to hear you are enjoying your new exercise routine! Yes, it's 100% addictive ;) Your results are impressive! Keep pushing it!

Don't forget that 80% of our success is nutrition... esp when it comes to building the muscle mass. We want to hold on to those muscles that we worked so hard for. I'd recommend to pay extra attention to post and re workout meals, and consume roughly 1g of protein per 1lb of weight (daily).

Meat is a very poplar source of protein, but vegetarian diet has some good proteins to offer as well. I would recommend to take a closer look at dairy... fat free cottage cheese in the evenings (before bed time) is great. It has casein. An attractive property of the casein is its ability to form a gel or clot in the stomach. The ability to form this clot makes it very efficient in nutrient supply. The clot is able to provide a sustained slow release of amino acids into the blood stream, sometimes lasting for several hours. This provides better nitrogen retention and utilization by the body. It will work like an IV for your muscles while you sleep ;)

Good luck!

How is your nutrition?

Ok, got a bit of a story... since we are discussing things.

When I first moved to Hawaii, I decided I wanted to loose some weight. You know.. previous job I was trapped in a cubicle for months at a time it seemed.

I'm 6'2" and weighed 250 pounds (previous distance runner, lots of leg mass, 210 is my typical weight)

It was hard at first. Then I sat down one night and really did the math.
Here is what my "Typical" day looked like and what I was consuming :

1 - 16 oz bottle of Orange Juice for breakfast - 240 calories.
1 - 16 oz bottle of grapefruit juice for breakfast - 240 calories.
1 - 16 oz bottle of white milk for lunch 190 calories.
1 - 16 oz bottle of chocolate milk for lunch 240 calories.
4 - 24 ounce bottles of Pepsi rest of the day. 300 calories per bottle, 1,200 calories.

Total... 2,110 calories.

Notice....... I have not mentioned food yet.

I figured it out... I was putting in close to 4,500 calories a day. And this was the norm for me for months and months at a time, possibly years. I was doing over 2,000 a day in just liquids. I decided that for 1 month, I was going to give up the liquids and drink just water. I figured that if it took me 4 years to put on 40 pounds, then I was already burning a lot of energy and the calories. If I even just reduced the intake then I should be able to loose weight.

So.... barely changed the food "habit" was still at around 2,500 a day. But dumped all of the liquids for water only, eliminating 2,100 calories a day from my "diet"

Lost 15 pounds in 6 week. Dropped another 20 pounds in the next 9 weeks. 35 pounds total from just dropping the liquids. WOW !

Then I started to walk a lot too....

If anyone is interested in taking a "little walk" check us out for November !
http://www.WalkTheTalkHawaii.org/ It currently has last years info on it, but I believe this year it starts on the 11th.

Over the past year i have been pretty much chained to the chair..... and started to put some weight back on again. (yea.. too much pepsi too)
Last week my bike was stolen. So now i am walking a lot more again. I can already feel a difference.

If I join then it will interrupt my several months of work on my personal Buddha belly !

O wait.. darn I clicked join already.
Ok.. i guess water instead of pepsi for dinner tonight.

The icon is great :)

Started at the gym for the first time ever only a month ago, and I must confess I'm loving it. Seems utterly bizarre to me that I'm torturing my body, pushing it hard and making everything ache, and yet I can't help but go back for more.

I've always been on the light side of a healthy weight (maybe 145lb & 6'0"), and I'm amazed at how quickly I've actually gained weight. I'm now up to 151lb with my original target being 160. I wouldn't surrender my gym membership now for anything.

My other half is a vegetarian which does make juggling my diet just that little bit more tricky though. I'm used to meat with most meals, and now it's becoming more by nature of a treat than a regular thing.
