Just a note to all Maui Tech Hui folks -- construction continues on the Science Building, and classes opening slated for Jan. 2013, including Maui's first Teaching Observatory, 8 labs (Marine Sciences, Optics, Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry et al).  If you have not been on a tour, let me know.

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving at my home, Sugar Ranch (http://www.sugarranchmaui.com) with fellow techies Garrett Lisi and Les Vogel. Garett, Les, and I hope to organize a holiday party for us Maui techies at Sugar Ranch. Garrett is especially keen on us getting a fresh ahi for sashimi! We definitely want to arrange a get together while Les is back in town.

Come to the Maui Venture Forum this Friday at the Maui Tropical Plantation from 10a.m. to 2 p.m.

Michael Snyder will present on the Hawaii Electric Vehicle Network (http://HEVN.net) which is doing R&D in conjunction with an EV rental operation expected to start in the first half of 2013  He has a commitment from GM to provide 500 Chevy Volts, and what looks like financing from GE to build charging infrastructure. Collaborations with Hitachi and NEDO are also in the works.

Lynn Rasmussen wil provide an update on SkillStory.com an online flexible platform for showcasing and developing individual skills and/or group or company capabilities.

Vince Mina will talk about the economics of running a small farm as well as provide an update on the Maui Farmers Union which averages 150+ people at its monthly gatherings looking at food system issues.

I will provide an update of the HI Community Exchange project (http://H-CX) and David LeFevre will introduce http://theunitedfieldcorporation.com which is launching in ten communities around the U.S.

If there is interest we will bring this back as a regular event.   Forums in '08 and '09 were successful in multiple ways.  See http://CoolProjectsMaui.com and click on Venture Forums to see info including video of presentations.

To register for this Friday's event go to http://MauiVentureForum.eventbrite.com - We need to provide a head count at the end of the day today, so register right away if you haven't already.

Yup, saw your post this morning! Details for the Maui RFI info session were just released this morning and similarly the Eventbrite RSVP site was just updated to reflect this new info. Hopefully there will be a good showing on Thursday! Yes, you are correct David, it does operate more closely to an RFP.

All - Please RSVP (http://lava.eventbrite.com) by Tuesday, July 17th if you are interested in applying!

Comment by David B. Fisher on July 13, 2012 at 10:15am

I was hoping you would catch this and add details, like how to sign up.  BTW, the term RFI is a bit misleading.  My understanding is that RFI means Request for Information and is normally a form of market research leading to the development of a request for proposals (RFP).  What we have here is what I would call an RFP. It looks like there is a requirement for a 100% funding match.

Thanks David! To clarify this info session to be held next Thursday is for those who are interested in developing/operating an accelerator and wish to apply for the RFI.

For more info and to RSVP visit: http://lava.eventbrite.com

As you may have read, the HI Legislature is looking to invest $2 million in new incubator/accelerator programs.  Karl Fooks from the HI Strategic Development Corporation is overseeing the use of this money and he is doing an information session next Thursday, July 19th at 1 p.m.   This will probably be by phone or Webex, although if there are enough interested people he might fly over and probably do it at the Maui tech park.  I am attaching HSDC LAVA Program RFI 2012.pdf which provides more background.

Any Maui Techies interested in Open Govt?

Fair bit of activity over on Oahu.  State/county/city are all getting data up and sharing platform, etc.  There is a webinar this week on the software ...

It would be good to have some Maui participation ...

Join Us for an Introduction and Briefing on Open Data.

The State of Hawai'i will be launching its open data site at

data.hawaii.gov in July with selected datasets.  In advance of the

launch, the Office of Information Management and Technology has

arranged for an introduction and briefing from Socrata, the open data

site service provider. This 30 minute briefing will provide background

information on open data, including:

What is Open Data

How other federal, state and local government agencies are using Open Data

Why Open Data is important to Hawaii

Join us for this online webinar to see what the buzz is all about and

to get a preview of open data capabilities.

Please feel free to share this invitation with others; this is an

"Open" initiative, after all.
