I thought all she wanted was a new central server with RAID so that she can share and deal with very large files. Why add QTask?

Wow I didn't know I was going to spark such a lively debate! I will in fact be looking at QTask. I think as long as we feel our internet connection reliability (which is pretty decent) is the main factor, we can at least do the free trial and see how it goes while maintaining a more local backup system as well.
Thank you all for the input! I am hoping to attend the Startup meetup as well, as I missed the last gathering at WokStar. Thanks again!

Reichart - I think this conversation is a victim of non-verbal communication. You stated, "Qtask is sort of like this site (Ning) for adults that have real work to get done..." I said you are comparing apples and oranges. You responded with "I am?" so I took the time to read about your product and provide a justification for my assertion that they are not directly comparable. I was not disparaging you or your product. Next time you are on Oahu I'm happy to buy you a beer and chat in person.

You are conflating social networks and business collaboration tools. None of the reviews Iʻve read of your product characterize it as "...a social network, for business" as you do. Your own marketing material and these reviews characterize Qtask as a business tool for collaboration and project management. It seems to be a very good tool for this, but I donʻt see any evidence it is a social network (public or intra-SNS.) Social networks have, at their core, social graphs - connections between people (friends, business associates, etc.) Can I "friend" a person on Qtask or form a colleague connection as I can on LinkedIn? These connections, and the connections of my connections facilitate functionality such as limiting visibility of content based on the degrees of separation between me and other members (e.g. "friends of friends" settings on Facebook or the degrees of separation search on LinkedIn.) This is different than organizing people in projects and tasks as business collaboration tools do.

If you take a look at Ning in CrunchBase, the "Competitors" area will give you a good idea of the players in this space. They are very different from your competitors in terms of features, positioning, etc.

Reichart: But I must have touched a nerve, so , sure, I agree with everything you said as well...
You didnʻt hit any nerves. I didnʻt write Ning ;-) As you pointed out, you use the right tool for the job. TechHui isnʻt a business. Its a community site that is free for anyone with a connection to Hawaii and technology. Many of the members are students, professors, etc. Maybe Iʻm misunderstanding Qtask, but it doesnʻt seem to be positioned toward free community social networks. The players in this area are Ning, SocialGo, KickApps, etc. You identify your competitors as Microsoft (Outlook), 37Signals, WebOffice, etc. They are very different spaces.
I look forward to trying your free trial. It looks like a great tool for businesses and may be a fit for some of Ikayzoʻs customers.

Reichart: I live in a different universe of high accountability and transparency.
I think you will find many of your fellow TechHuians live in that world. We donʻt use Ning for bank or hedge fund customers.
Reichart: Personally I would be a fan of using FaceBook as the front facing site and a dark net once people are "in".
We utilize Facebook in various ways (see http://www.techhui.com/page/gigabit-hi) and will soon, thanks to new features from Ning, support Facebook login. Brian setup a Facebook "like" (fan) page, but we havenʻt yet had the time to populate it with content.

I Hope so...

Reichart: Yes, complete versioning, locking, AND, every files tracks its intier access history... but wait there's more! You can syndicate files outside the secure vault of the system to the outside world, and Qtask tracks the IP access addresses for that as well.
Qtask sounds like an impressive tool. We (Ikayzo, not TechHui) are going to take a look at it.
Reichart: Qtask is sort of like this site (Ning) for adult that have real work to get done...
You are comparing apples and oranges. Ning is a social network, not a business productivity tool. The purpose of this site is to help techies in Hawaii connect with each other, share best practices, find out about new tech ventures in our state and stay informed. Although no system is perfect, I believe Ning along with the extensions weʻve added serve this purpose quite well. Weʻve found employees, customers and partners through the site, as have numerous other companies.
Reichart: This is not a slam of this system, but hey...we at least send you an email copy of the posts here so you are not forced to log in every bloody time LOL
This annoys me as well. They are obviously doing that to drive traffic, but Iʻd rather concentrate on value for the users. Unfortunately there are no API hooks that allow us to modify the messaging system, so we just have to deal with it for now. If and when there is an API hook or an option to change this, we will jump on it.
Les Vogel: Slam away - it's annoying to get emails that say come read what going on, many times a day. I just want to know. Why not tell me.
Its to drive traffic, but I expect they will eventually provide us with an option to allow the emails to contain the content of the message. They have over $100M in funding and no longer have to support free sites, so we should be seeing a lot of new features soon :-)

Nice to see you going David. Hopefully some people can leverage your experience and connections.

Sarah, what is the quality of your Internet connection? If you are out in parts of E. Maui it might not be that great in which case an on site solution that mirrors to the net might be appropriate. I know Google apps are a pain without a really good connection. Posting Excel, files, etc. at QTask might be OK since all the editing work is done locally.

Tommy, count me in for a Start-up Meet Up.
