Update on Maui Makers & Great Global Hackerspace Challenge ...
Our first prototype/demonstration for the Chill Box is under construction and will be shown this week Saturday April 2, at the Maui Agricultural Festival (http://www.mauicountyfarmbureau.org/mcaf.shtml) in the Educational tent.
The prototype is a small styrofoam ice chest that will be full of chilled water - chilled by containers of ice floating in it. A small submersible fountain pump circulates the water thru a small loop of 1/2" copper tube. The idea is there will be condensation on the copper tube and it will drip onto a small planter of "starts".
The festival runs 9am-4pm on the lū‘au grounds of Maui Tropical Plantation in Waikapū.  The general event is free and open to the public.
for more info see Maui Makers google group..

Two things...

1) Reminder of dinner next Tuesday

2) A client of mine is looking for another software contractor.  If your interested send me your resume and I'll forward it.  Ideally one with lots of skills. (PHP, Python)

Hey Kids,

If anyone would like to see the talk I gave at the Institute for Astronomy a month ago, "A Geometric Theory of Everything," I'll be doing a repeat performance at a casual private potluck dinner out in Huelo this Saturday around 6pm. There are a few spots open -- email me soon and I should be able to put you on the invite list.

Best,

Garrett

Maui Makers (our local makerspace) has been selected to participate in the Great Global Hackerspace Challenge (of spring 2011).  We have six weeks to complete a project that has a) educational goal b) uses microcontroller c) use portable power supply and d) orders some parts from Element14.  More details on our blog: http://www.mauimakers.com/blog/?p=622 (and the google group)

Now if they just had something similar with the size/strength to wrestle hoses into place and turn valves so they could get some water on those rods.

Hard to have an uprising of pilot-less drones.  :-)

I'm afraid the Less Wrong article had too many undefined TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms) for my taste.  I got tire of trying to figure out what AGI (adjusted gross income?), FAI (flightless albatross index?) and TDT (truly demented tautology?) meant. ;-(
