Thanks, Karen. What gets me is this guy is in the legislature. Lawyers, right? Do they actually read the Law of the Land?

Comment by Karen Chun on January 26, 2012 at 11:14am

David - I don't see that they can even require Time Warner, Verizon, AT&T and so on to do this from the state level.  Seriously violates the interstate commerce clause, IMO.  And I'll be laughing so hard when these huge, powerful, RICH corporations start funding his opponents because they're so p'o'd

Yes, Peter - I'd love to see a video of Rep Mizuno attempting to justify this bill.  In addition to outraging his constituents, I bet it would be hilarious in its cluelessnes about what he thinks he's proposing vs what he's ACTUALLY proposing.

If I have anything to say about it, whatever happens in Hawaii government goes on YouTube. ;)

A new marketing slogan:  What happens in Hawaii stays in Hawaii...on servers accessible by the government for two years.

Aside from Rep Mizuno, contact your LOCAL representative.  For myself in Haiku that is

Representative
Yamashita , Kyle T. (D)
Hawaii State Capitol, Room 422
Phone 808-586-6330
Fax 808-586-6331
E-Mail: repyamashita@Capitol.hawaii.gov

Find yours at http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/members/legislators.aspx?chamber=H

The financial burden will be devastating to not just internet companies, but any ISP --- which includes HOTELS and COFFEE SHOPS.   And can you imagine the publicity effect this will have on Tourism?  "Come to Hawaii - We will remember EVERY web site and email you sent for 2 years."

I knew we'd have to remain vigilant after SOPA/PIPA, but give me a break.

Comment by Karen Chun on January 26, 2012 at 10:01am

Rep John Mizumo is on Facebook - send him a message reminding him of SOPA and what happens when the wrath of the Internet descends on your head. http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001076881905

And don't forget to submit testimony:
http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/submittestimony.aspx?billtype=HB&...   Type in HB2288 to bring up the testimony page.

Here's what I wrote:

Dear Legislators,

This bill violates the First Amendment and most likely the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

In addition to its chilling effect on free speech, it's unwarranted spying on U.S. citizens, it also imposes an onerous burden on ISPs. Have you even calculated the cost in terms of simply storing these records?

Please kill this bill right away before it goes any farther.

Thank you

I already sent email.  Here is his address in case you'd like to do the same: repmizuno@capitol.hawaii.gov

More here:

More than the big brother aspect and the guilty until proven innocent aspect, there is the added financial burden on internet companies, which are already struggling, to buy expensive equipment to comply with this should it move forward.  Lastly, it does not say what companies can or can not do with the collected info extra-governmentally, such as sell the data to advertisers.

Very Bad Bill in Hawaii ...

Rep John MIzuno of Oahu is lead sponsor of a new bill that requiring the creation of virtual dossiers on state residents. The measure, H.B. 2288, says "Internet destination history information" and "subscriber's information" such as name and address must be saved for two years.  H.B. 2288, which was introduced Friday, says the dossiers must include a list of Internet Protocol addresses and domain names visited.

We need to stop this thing ASAP.

And then get rid of anyone who sponsored or supports it.
