Sounds great - I will check those other groups out. My parents live in Kihei, so I stay with them. They used to live in Makawao so I have spent most of my time Upcountry and on the north shore.

We got our coworking space up and running here by first organizing weekly coworking meetups at a coffee shop with a big shared worktable and free wi-fi. I can't think of any place off the top of my head that has a space like that, though. You could start by scheduling meetups regularly in different areas, and seeing how many people show. That could give you an indication of where the demand is -- without signing a lease.

(That commute you shudder about is a pleasant daydream to me... I'd trade the hour it takes to get across town here in gridlock for cruising the Mokulele on my Honda any day. ;)

Jennie - no regular co-working meetups on Maui yet. Social Media User Group has monthly meetings. MauiMakers has weekly public meetings in Pu'unene. TechHui's MauiTechies meets irregularly for dinner chats. We've been talking off line about where/when to have next Maui Techies meet up. Winter tends to bring more people to the island (like you) - perhaps we should meet up more.  Where do you stay on island?

more importantly and general question for all here ..

Where would you like to see a co-working space?

Kihei area has MEDB/MRTC which might support some small co-working space.

Lahaina - for those on west island that dont want a commute.

Upcountry (pukalani/makawao) ?

Kahului/Wailuku might be more accessible to north/south shore folks than one or other... although its still a 30+min commute (shudder).

This dispersion of population seems to be an hurdle for most social businesses (like mauimakers).  The space needs to be local enough to get to easily for enough people that shared rent is affordable.

Great to see some movement getting a coworking space up and running on Maui. I spend 3-4 months of the year on the island, working remotely full-time. I spend most of this time in Starbucks or other coffee shops, and next time I'm there, I'd like to be a bit more comfortable (and less obligated to buy and drink sugary beverages!).

In addition to the discussions about starting up a space, are there any Web/tech companies who open up their offices for freelancers/traveling coders? Or are there any regular coworking meetups somewhere I should be aware of? I'll be back in a couple of weeks, when the snow flies here in eastern Canada, and would love to meet up to code and chat with some Maui tech peeps.

Below is a link to the follow-up notes (public) from the Maui co-working conversation at MRTC on Oct. 13. Thanks to Doug and John.

There was a lot of great discussion and insight. Would like to hear more from those that could not be there (will add to the notes).

Hi everyone,

Several of us who have expressed an interest in Maui co-working are getting together on Thursday, Oct. 13 to brainstorm ideas, gather input, and explore possibilities. While the event is taking place in Kihei, and MRTC is hosting, I want to stress that our goal is to come up with a coordinated set of spaces in different parts of the island. Organizations with potential space in Kahului, up-country, and Lahaina are participating in the discussion.

Even if you're not ready to sign up for space at this point, if co-working is something that intrigues you I'll encourage you to come out and join the discussion. We're just getting started, and figuring out where the demand is and what it looks like is an important part of moving forward.

I'm very interested in a co-working space on Maui. I'm ready to sign up for two days a week, and might even sign up for one slot full time so that I had flexibility to come in throughout the week. I'll also donate an XBOX 360 and a bunch of multiplayer games to the break room.

Going to canvas and see if there is any interest for this weekend.

Film fest hours (and location) are quite spread out. A morning or early PM meetup would avoid any conflict I think.

Maui Makers is in Pu'unene near Maui Friends of Library and Community Work Day.  We have a 40' container that is becoming our community workshop. We can use CWD's building for meetings with prior arrangement.

You might check the discussion thread on Maui Techies about the next meetup  http://www.techhui.com/group/mauitechies/forum/topics/hey-are-we-ev...

I won't be attending the festival and can meet. I like to do things when they are fresh, putting it off can sometimes stall....maybe not in this case, but how I like to work. If you aren't available let me know and we can set a different date.
