TechHui

Hawaiʻi's Technology Community

We had a great turnout at the Ubuntu Installfest at University of Hawaii on Saturday! Cool to meet up with other fans who use Linux on their personal computers, not just for work.

Topics discussed:

--Regular monthly or bi-monthly meetups.

--Mentor program. Partner beginner and advanced users together to help each other learn Linux.

--Workshops to learn new tips and tricks for better productivity.

--Brainstorming topics that would attract new users: managing your music under Linux, open-source social networking apps, syncing data across multiple devices with Ubuntu One cloud service, etc.

--Linux for academics. Open-source tools like the Zotero Firefox add-on for citations, LyX document processor, etc. were recommended.

--Showcase: a high-end Dell Latitude laptop running Ubuntu 11.04. Quad-core processor. With multi-threading, it registers as 8 cores. Screen with 1920 by 1200 resolution.

--"Rock Stars Use Keyboards." A member demonstrated in Fedora 15 the speed at which he could do web browsing, file management, and more by not using the mouse or touchpad. Impressive!

--A live demo of the Prey Project, a free, open-source anti-theft app for smartphones and laptops. Uses Google Maps to locate a stolen device to within 100 feet.

--Suggestion to start a study group for people who want to "go pro" and get Linux Professional Institute certification.

--Introduction to the Command Line, a free PDF e-book published by the Free Software Foundation.

--More beginner resources:

--Ubuntu Pocket Guide (free ebook)

--Ubuntu Kung Fu. Book of quick and easy tricks to tweak your system. Not free.

--Ubuntu Manual Project. (website documentation)

--Recommended restaurant: Bangkok Chef.

Special thanks to Paul and the other staff members at the UH Dept. of Educational Technology for putting on this event. TechHui was also great for spreading the word and attracting more people to come. See you at the next meeting!

You guys should contact the Hackerspace guys at http://hicapacity.org/ . I think there is an obvious fit, and they might also be getting a space soon.

Gorm Lai,

Awesome, I had never heard of Hackerspace until you posted that...see you next meeting!
